Edward Anthony Putzier of 350 Ponca Place, Boulder, CO, died June 22, 2022 at Boulder Community Health. Mr. Putzier was born on a farm near Litchfield, MN to Herbert E. and Esther 0. Putzier on November 4, 1924. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, who died on March 14, 2009 after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for 18 years.
Edward attended schools in the Litchfield area and graduated from high school in 1942. He served in the US Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician during World War II. He graduated from Mankato State College in Mankato, MN in 1950 with majors in mathematics and physics. After completing a fellowship awarded by the Atomic Energy Commission for advanced study in the field of Health Physics at the University of Rochester, NY, he accepted a job in the Health Physics Department at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant, south of Boulder, CO. He married Jean MacMullen of Yonkers, NY on May 10, 1952. He retired from Rocky Flats Plant in 1983 as Health Sciences and Safety Manager after 31 years of employment.
The Putziers moved from their home in southeast Boulder to the Frasier Meadows Retirement Community several blocks away on April 4, 1994. Mr. Putzier became very active in the community, served on a number of committees, served on the Frasier resident council for 4 years and was the publisher of the Frasier newsletter for 13 years. For many years he played electronic organ to entertain the Health Care facility residents, participated in various entertainment programs, and played for gatherings throughout the Community. ln July 2009 the Board of Trustees presented him with a Distinguished Service Award citing him as a "True Renaissance Man, generously sharing his many talents and visions with his colleagues at Frasier." He was also the recipient of the "2014 Betty and Bill Fischer Service to Community Award."
A self-taught organist, Mr. Putzier was the Boulder Elks Lodge Organist for 13 years and was appointed as the Grand Lodge Organist for the National Meeting of the Order held in Denver in 1986. As a member of the Mountain View United Methodist church, he sang in the choir for 35 years and was financial secretary for 17 years. He enjoyed golf, fishing and sports in general.
Mr. Putzier is survived by a son, Dr. Donald Putzier, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Stephanie Putzier, of Mankato, MN; daughter Laurie Haddenhorst and son-in-law Bruce Haddenhorst, of Cheyenne, WY; a sister-in-law, Lavaune Putzier, of Litchfield, MN; three grandchildren: Stephen Haddenhorst (Kelsey), an employee of Campus Crusade for Christ; Army Captain Edward Putzier (Makenzie), and Leslie Geving (Ryan), a registered nurse; three great-grandchildren: Jordan and Calvin Haddenhorst and Natalie Putzier; and also various cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, June 29 at 1 p.m. in the Canyon Center at Frasier Retirement Community, 350 Ponca Place, Boulder, Colorado. Memorials may be directed to Frasier Retirement Community or to Mountain View United Methodist Church, 355 Ponca Place, Boulder, Colorado, 80303.
