February 7, 1936 – March 11, 2025
Georgieanna Nodland Petrow, 89, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Brookdale Boulder Creek in Boulder, Colorado.
Georgi was born on February 7, 1936, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Carolyn (Quiggle) and Frank Nodland. Much younger than her three siblings, she was particularly fond of her closest brother—Franklin, known as Buddy—and proud of his service in the Marines as one of Carlson’s Raiders. He was killed in action in World War II at the age of 18; Georgi was 6 at the time.
In 1954, Georgi graduated from Colo (Iowa) High School. She and Gordon Greer were married in 1959 in Des Moines, Iowa, and had two children, Michael and Nancy. They later divorced. Georgi then met John Petrow and they lived in Iowa until the late 1990s, when they moved to Norfolk, Virginia. They married there in 2000. After John’s death in 2014, Georgi lived in Erie, Colorado.
Her career included working for Better Homes & Gardens magazine as an editor and for Younkers as an advertising copywriter and occasional model. She continued to be interested in fashion, and in her later years, among her favorite accessories was a very eye-catching pair of red shoes.
A lifelong artist, Georgi is especially known for her beautiful paintings—big, bold flowers; intricately detailed landscapes and still lifes; and abstracts and collages. Since 2014 alone, she created more than 200 artworks. She also loved drawing, riding horses, cooking, gardening, reading, corresponding with friends, and watching NBA games. She followed several NBA teams and prominently displayed her Steph Curry bobblehead.
Georgi is survived by her daughter, Nancy Duran of Urbandale, Iowa; her daughter-in-law, Brenda Hadenfeldt of Lafayette, Colorado; two grandchildren, Benjamin Duran of Norfolk, Virginia, and Olivia Duran Gerhardt (Taylor Gerhardt) of Chesapeake, Virginia; extended family; and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Petrow; her son, Michael Greer; two brothers, DeWitt Nodland and Franklin Nodland; and one sister, Carolyn Mousseau.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project, the Norfolk (Virginia) Botanical Garden, or the Chrysler Museum of Art (Norfolk, Virginia).
