On Sunday December 13th 2020. Gwendolyn Verniece Hardy Campbell went to be with the lord. Gwendolyn was born in Westlake, Louisiana on October 10th 1938 to the late Sherman Mills and Artemese Towner.
Gwendolyn married Lucien Hardy Sr. in Texas in 1954. They moved to Boulder, CO with her five children and were one of the few families of color that lived in Boulder in early 1962. After leaving Mossville, Louisiana Gwendolyn proceeded to build a family model of faith, love, strength, and success. That continued with her marriage to Paul Campbell in 1976. Attending collegiate courses in Child Development (’66-75) and obtaining a Child Development Associate Credential in 1984; Gwendolyn established more than a 30-year career at Boulder County Head Start where she was recognized by the City of Boulder and Head Start for her outstanding achievements. Her heart and passion were her children, grandchildren and as she would say “adopted” children she taught throughout the community. Gwendolyn was an entrepreneur in her own right and dwelled in many endeavors with abundant success. A week could not go by in Boulder without Gwendolyn being recognized by her accomplishments or that of her children.
She knew that an education or vocation was key to stability, and independence. Gwendolyn set the bar high for herself. She passed on her competitive nature to her children and grandchildren and encouraged them to use their god given resources to excel in whatever they set their minds and bodies to. She had endless enthusiasm in supporting her family’s dreams and aspirations. As a result, her descendants have achieved great accomplishments and have been highly successful.
Gwendolyn loved her family, church and community. She loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family. Neighborhood children would gather around the kitchen table for after-school meals. She gave to others when she had nothing to give and she loved others when love was hard to find. She was a faithful servant of Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her six children: Lucien Jr., Reneé, (Mike), Sonya, Charmaine, Travis and Aralitta. Her two stepdaughters: Paula (Hank) and Priscilla (Marvin). Thirteen Grand children: Lucien III., Crystal (Chad), (Earleen), Preston (Kara), Amber, Jason, Jarrett, Mariah (Mike), LaRamie (Christian), Levi, Samuel, Luke, Pryce and step grandson Brian. Ten Great-grand Children: Brookelyn, Lyla, Marley, Parker, Tate, Peyton, Honor, Easton, Declan, Raela. Two sisters: Artemese (Kermit) and Christina (Irving) and her niece and nephews Artina (Marcus) Kary Jr., Kaylon, Norman, Joel, Lovell and Christopher (Jamie).
She is preceded in death by her husband Paul, mother Artamese Irvin, father Sherman Mills, step-father Benard Irvin, grandfather David Duff Towner, grandmother Ira Viola Towner, brother Kary, son Wendell, daughter-in law Carmen, son-in-law William and grandsons Darius and Adriel.
Gwendolyn’s service will be Tuesday, December 22nd beginning at 11:00AM at Crist Mortuary proceeded by entombment at Mountain View Memorial Park.
