Joan D. McKibbon, a caring and devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and sister, passed away on January 21st at her home in Broomfield, Colorado. She left this world suddenly at the age of 85 after struggling to overcome many illnesses over the past few years.
Joan was born on March 6, 1936, in Detroit, to the late Edward and Genevieve (Tracy) Daniels.
After graduating from St. Phillip Neri High School in 1954, Joan pursued her dream of becoming an educator. Joan completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education with honors in 1958 from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan. She enjoyed sharing her passion for learning with her students and cherished her time as an elementary educator within the Saint Clair Shores School District.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Joan. She enjoyed traveling by car or RV on the open roads across the United States. Joan cherished her visits with friends and family along the way and was fond of exploring historic sights, museums, national parks and great restaurants. Throughout the years, Joan loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals and desserts for her family. Mostly, Joan enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially her ten grandchildren. Joan was an avid sports fan, but she preferred to watch college basketball and loved March Madness. In her later years, Joan enjoyed quiet evenings, knitting, long walks, time at the cottage, kayaking and attending her grandchildren’s school programs, sporting events and competitions.
Joan is survived by her three children, Janet Key, Tracy Dundon (Kevin) and Michael McKibbon (Sabra), her brother Edward Daniels (Betty), her beloved grandchildren, Allen, Kyra, Jack, Kelly, Sarah, Anastasia, Mary-Katherine, Michael Jr., Dominic and Joseph. In addition to many loved cousins, nieces, and nephews. Sadly, Joan was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Solon and her dear friend and husband, Jim Thompson.
In lieu of flowers or customary remembrances, those who wish to further honor Joan’s memory are invited to consider contributing to the Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer research and prevention.
A memorial service and the internment of ashes will be held at a later date to be determined by the family.
