Keith Anthony Julien, aged 58, passed away on April 14, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado after a short illness. Known for his disarming laugh, clear-eyed judgment, and potent intellect, Keith was a loving husband and father; a world-renowned scholar; an insightful and prolific researcher; a generous collaborator; and a devoted teacher, mentor, and friend.
Born June 12, 1965, Keith grew up in London, England, the second of four children born to O’Neal and Agnes, who met as teenagers on the boat from Grenada to England. His academic trajectory took shape when he received his BSc degree in Mathematics and Physics with 1st Class Honors from King’s College, University of London, in 1986. He went on to earn his PhD degree in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge.
Keith's 33-year affiliation with CU-Boulder began in 1991 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. He joined the Applied Mathematics Department (APPM) as an instructor in 1997 and moved through the ranks until he was promoted to full professor in 2008. Keith was elected Department Chair in 2015, a role in which he served until his passing. Over the years, Keith received multiple awards and fellowships, authored more than 80 research papers, and is cited more than 4,000 times according to Google Scholar. Very few people displayed the level of passion and genuine love for their work as Keith did. Beyond his myriad professional accomplishments, Keith played soccer, cricket, TaeKwonDo and enjoyed music and playing the electric bass.
Most of all, Keith was an incredible husband and proud father, whose love and support for his family were unwavering. A champion of his sons’ education, sports and professional pursuits, he will be remembered by his family for his steady and supportive demeanor, his quick and dry wit, and his intentional pursuits of justice and reason. Keith is survived by his wife of 26 years, Susan; his sons Simon and Theo; his siblings Kelvin (Lisa), Sandra, and Sherma (Terry); his parents O'Neal and Agnes; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
A Memorial Service to honor Keith's life will be held on his birthday, June 12, 2024, at 10:00 am at Grusin Music Hall (C112) in the Imig Music Building located at 1020 18th St, Boulder, CO 80302.
