I can't believe it's been almost seven years, still miss you bro. This bike was Leland's, still rolling with the Lolo vibe.

Your 40th year- yesterday your birthday felt like summer.  Really, this whole month the sun has been pouring into the house, I think it's making the kids extra goofy.  The youngest trying to start this morning by smacking on a big piece of bubble gum.  Made me think of you and me when we were little.  Love you, miss you always.

Yesterday was your birthday. I think of you so often. I know the angels had a wonderful party last night. Love always.

Leland, I can't forget that you would be 40 today. Miss you as much as ever.

Lee, It was one of those beautiful fall days yesterday.  Me and my youngest, we went to an orchard.  There were huge apples everywhere, he only wanted the little lunchbox size so he kept trading everybody.  Wish you were here.   We miss you.  Happy birthday yesterday and much love cousin.

It's hard to put into words my thoughts on someone who was there for so much of my life; it's not a linear memory, but a flurry of images.  I hope I can give you a good impression.
I am one of Lee's cousin's from his mom's side of the family.  There are a lot of cousins in the Crow family and well, for a long time it was just Reed and Lee in a strong matriarch.  Even though we all lived quite a distance apart, we tried to get together during the holidays and summertime.  The Crows coming from Green Bay and eventually, Cincinnati and all of us together for 3 or 4 days in Michigan.  Until my Aunt Kay had her 3 boys, it was just Lee and Reed and my sister Kristyn and me.  I smile thinking about how those boys managed amongst all of us hens, with feathers flying.
Lee and I are very close in age and he was one of my best buddies growing up.  I was a nervous kid, at times I didn't know what to do with my energy.  Kristyn and I, we would wait with such anticipation for Lee and Reed's visit.  Lee had a lot of energy too, but he would express it in a physical way, and us 4 cousins we would find lots of ways to spend our time outside.  I have a lot of memories of hiking through the woods with Uncle Randy winter, rain, summer or snow.  It didn't matter as long as we were moving!

I loved when Lee came to visit, getting into trouble was a lot more fun when he was around.  I remember trying to swim in this mucky old pond behind our house, we insisted to my mom that we hadn't gotten wet, but my brown leather sandals were drenched and the orange dye had stained my feet.  The jig was up!
Having those types of adventures early in life, with this strong, energetic, masculine force, it actually taught me a lot about how to deal with my husband.  Just the other day we were in our living room, my daughter and I were sitting and quietly reading on the sofa, while my husband was swinging our 5 year old by his ankles, like a human pendulum!  In an instant, I looked up and as they were about to swing into the side of our sofa, I put my hand out to cushion their impact, "Guys, can we slow it down a bit?  Or take it outside?"...  I looked at the two of them standing there, laughing with a wild look in their eyes and I also had to laugh. It was exactly something Uncle Randy and Lee would have done.  And Danil, my husband, he loves Lee.  Lee was always ready to throw Danil into the mix, whether it was football or roller hockey.  It didn't matter that Danil couldn't skate or catch or throw, he was family and Lee made sure he was a part of our circle.  I'm a better mom and wife because of my cousin, thank you Aunt Carol and thank you Uncle Randy for being such loving parents.  And I know it is not good to hate, I know it doesn't do me much good to carry it with me, but I hate Manic Depression Bipolar Disease.  It took away so much of what we loved about Lee.  I know who he was at his core.  I know if he were here right now he would pick me up and give me a big hug and I would feel as light as a feather.  We love you Lee, we miss you.

To the parents of Leland,
I didn't know your son but I was so saddened to read of his death.  I found it so brave of you to acknowledge his ending is own life.  So many of our loved ones struggle with mental
illness and finding help is so hard.  Please accept my heartfelt
sympathy.  He sounded like a talented, fun, loving person.
I hope you are surrounded by those who love you and can take comfort in their support.

Dearest Crow Family,
My heart is broken to hear that our earth has lost the one and only LeLand Crow. I LOVE this man so much, he is one of the only human beings that I could have seen a solid future with. Just a couple of months ago, on a summers weekend in June, Leland and I went waterskiing, hiking and spent an incredible weekend together. Leland's artistry carried into the way he carefully crafted his beautiful words. He was just telling me and my family what a beautiful and cherished childhood he had. I feel like i know you, Randy, Carol and Reed, from the loving things that Leland shared with me about his family. LeLand was the most real, genuine, sincere, and big Hearted man I have ever met. We met in boulder, both being artists. One of the last things he said to me was the highest form of a compliment I have ever received in my life. He said, "You are the art itself, You are a living embodiment of your own masterpiece." He told me no piece of art I ever make, would compare to the living work of art that I am. I am so sorry for your loss, and I feel your pain. Leland was a very unique and special being, most people do not know how to be so real. He was an incredible listener. He always knew how to make me laugh and gave such positive and grounded energy to the world around him. A piece of my heart will rest with him forever.

This is just a perspective, perhaps calling upon the fifth dimension where Leland resides, and observes us all.
I wish to share what dominates my thoughts from my viewpoint: that of the memorial service in the church in Boulder on Saturday.  I have texted to close friends that I have never been to a more beautiful memorial service, nor of such power, nor of such incredible eloquence, than that of Leland's celebration.
I wish that others may share what the multitudes in the packed church heard and witnessed.
The preacher/minister/clergyman was forthright and honest about his limited relationship with the family, but his honesty and his compassionate words were true---not from a book of proverbs, or of some canned text for events---nope, it was truly relevant to those of us in attendance.  I thank this gentleman for being, well, just that, a gentle man guiding the service.
Leland's Dad, Randy, took charge of what could have gone a million directions, by establishing direction for Leland's celebration/remembrance/memorial.  And that direction was guided by Power, (wasn't Leland about “Power” when you were in his presence?), a Power of we are here to celebrate and tell stories of a unique, wonderful man---our friend, Leland.  Randy piloted Leland's ship of memories and character, and lightened a melancholic, remorseful, and tearful crowd.
To establish the atmosphere: may I simply say that there are Fathers of the Year, Fathers of the Decade---well, my award goes to Randy as Father of the Universe-Timeless.  But it is not about Randy, it is about Leland, and that's what this Dad helped us to know.  “Oh Captain, my Captain…”
With this theme established, others could follow, but we as celebrants of Leland were able to relax, and reduce the consumption of facial tissues that were conveniently and generously located in our pews.  We could use the muscles of our faces to smile, or at the very least, quit crying as much, (but not totally).
Leland was eulogized, praised, and kidded about by a cadre of relatives that must fill one of those Minnesota Counties.  And as Leland watched us all, he saw that he was the lynchpin of a family that extended not just in the church that day, but throughout all of you as his family.  Yes, YOU are truly part of Leland's family, whether you were there physically or in kindred spirit.  Leland captured You as not just a Friend, but as his real and newly adopted Aunt, Uncle, Brother, Sister, Cousin, Nephew, Niece, and on and on.  Each individual one of us was special to Leland, and he made a family that transformed us from friend to relative.
Randy spoke for Leland and Leland's illness, in that the magnitude, (this writer's personal assessment), of this long journey was filled with the support that could not have been more---family, friends, love, YOU, love, caring, compassion, help, support, love, YOU, attempts to help, Leland cognizant that he had issues beyond his capabilities, Leland honest about his needs and desires to beat what was beating him, and oh yes, family, friends, YOU, support, understanding---point being the magnitude, the abysmal depths of compressive pressure, were all withstood as long as any simple being could take.  And, as we know this GIANT of a man, as Stanley said, “A Man's Man”, he couldn't defeat this adversary.  And if I may opine without any insult, neither could anyone of us simple mortals have defeated this wicked adversary.  I mean, who would you send in first, as your first line of attack or defense than Leland Crow?  I'll answer that: nobody!
Aunts and Uncles and Cousins and Reed all shared their impressions, no, make that their deeply impressed feelings about Leland.  C'mon, one bear-hug from that guy and you were a convert to the greatest love one could feel.
Notwithstanding emotions, grief and tears, and a church full of those wanting to share their personal touch of Leland, we needed days, not just a few hours for memorializing and celebrating Leland.  May I repetitively state that I have never been in any house of worship where more eloquent and meaningful words have been spoken.
Roger, one of many dear friends who was with Leland during critical developmental years, who had Leland's winning goal in a championship hockey game beat his team, and yes, as closest friends travelling the world and living far from home, shared a complex relationship that revealed so much of this complex man.  I may be two generations removed from Roger, but I personally thank him for his challenging life and dedication and turmoil and ups and downs' reflections to help us to understand what we, as parents, never know about our kids, but find these things out from our kid's friends.
Not to single out so many others, but please understand that the relative importance of each person in Leland's life, (and I assure you that we became relatives,) were equally important to Leland.
Reed has, (note: not had), an older brother to follow, emulate, and to obey.  Reed shared a hilarious story about Leland's obsession to have things done his way, or as I may add, “correctly”, according to Leland's law.  My sons hiked to Ice Lakes Basin in SW Colorado this last July, and the only time that “brothers” Leland, Stanley (who declared that Leland was the “oldest brother I never had”), and Lech (let's just say strong-willed or strong-minded), had a “disagreement” over building a fire, or how-to-build-a-fire.  We're sharing this story over the luncheon in the basement of the church.  Lech tells Reed and the rest of us that the one contentious event involving Leland, (remember the 50% rule: we each share 50% of accountability and responsibility in whatever we participate in), was over making a campfire.  Lech went on that both he and Leland had different, unshared ideas about fire-building.  Lech started to build a fire, but, it was not “correct”, according to the Book of Leland.  (With all due liberties of inaccurate memory of exactness, please forgive this author of any small mistakes, Reed and Lech), Leland took a small piece of kindling that Lech had placed in the fire, and simply said that it was wrong.  It was stubborn against stubborn about how to blow on a fire, how to emplace the fuel directionally, or cross-directionally, and both fumed.  Knowing one character well, and the other by his dominant presence, well, it was a stand-off.  Of course, those knowing Stanley know that there was some intervention, but against these two strong opponents, he was better off stopping marmot or pika wars at high altitude.  Some yielding was made about the wood, in trade for how to blow on the fire at an altitude of nearly 12,500 ft.  But no one gave an inch.  But the best revelation came from blood-brother Reed: Reed told us how as kids, most all of those crazy Minn-Eh-sota types loved to go fishing as kids.  Not Leland.  He scoured the woods for the most appropriate pieces of wood to build fires with---as an apprentice to becoming certified Master Fire Builder.  The crowning achievement, perhaps the purpose of it all, was to find the hollow logs with which to crown the fuel, feudal, fuel-dal, fueled-all embers with a chimney-log.  Yep, a log that would chimney out the sparks and smoke of the hollow log as a coronation.  (No, not to show a new Pope had been selected…)  Reed simply implied, well, stated, words to the effect: “game over”.  Leland was the master fire-builder, and to further prove that, someone in the Crow family or extended family produced trophies of master fire-building or such, and those trophies were handed out years ago.  Game, Set, Match: Leland.
Importantly, and we return to the church celebration for Leland, Randy returned to speak to us all, and switched lenses on us, asking us to view this whole event and life with the realism of grief that we could not temporarily mask.  Randy asked us for “sixteen minutes”, and he clarified the long battles that Leland, parents, family, friends, supporters, and professional health personnel all tried.  And so did Leland, because denial was never this Man's Man's escape.  Everyone was aware of problems.  Randy did not implore, no, his eloquent message was that we ALL need to become more educated to Bi-Polar Disorder, and all mental illness challenges that we don't take the time to come to understand.  We ALL need to get involved, at even just a primer level, an introductory level, microscopic or at even an iota level if that's the start, to make changes in our society's understanding, and extremely painful and disparaging suffering that those we love, and those whom perhaps we may not know, and make an effective CHANGE for the benefit of existing and future sufferers.
My life changed with this all.  Maybe I'm alone with this thought, but I left in Peace that Leland found his Peace.  Wishing for Peace for all, is the unquantifiable reward I feel.
My last visual connection with Leland was him being next to me at a stoplight leaving Durango in his Dodge super-whatever, next to my BMW M-3.  I never look at “challengers”, nor do I ever need another speeding ticket.  But I violated my code of conduct and looked at the vehicle next to me.  Leland and Stanley, (riding shotgun with his “oldest brother I never had”), headed back to Boulder.  Leland's grin stretched his face, his laugh like a lumberjack.  In total violation of all my current beliefs, this gentle giant sucked me into his vortex, and when the light turned green, I floored it.  Of course, I had the advantage and the lead.  And in true BMW fashion, with an elegant whine of my engine.  Leland was laughing as he roared, I mean ROARED in front of my front bumper and then beyond.  My belief is that he is still laughing, and with a ROAR!

To the Crow Family,
Thank you for the lovely memorial service this past Saturday.  Your honesty and willingness to let others share in the healing process is truly a gift to those of us that have been touched by both Leland's life and death.  I only met Leland a short while ago but feel fortunate to have known such a kind spirit.  My deepest condolences to your beautiful, loving and exceptionally kind family.

I am so sad to hear this news.  Lee was a wonderful, kind, and amazing guy.  I was friends with him in high school and college and I can honestly say that I've had a crush on that gorgeous guy since I was 15 years old. Aunt Carol & Uncle Randy,

When we were young and had the chance to look up to two of the coolest cousins ever, there was no struggle for my parents rounding us into the car so we could "head to Cincy" for the holidays. Lee was not only big in stature, but was a strong, loving and courages person to his core. He taught me how to skip rocks up at Drummond and had an awesome set of dangling skills on the roller/ice rink. Ive never seen anyone eat as much Skyline chili and i will forever remember the bond we made through some great tasting, post-hockey food. Although Lee is gone, his spirit will forever remain in my heart. His passion and vigor in life is something I will always embody. I can speak for my brothers', Benjamin and Matthew, when i say how much we love the crows and how much we will miss our dear cousin Leeland. 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

I am so sorry to hear about Lee.  Carol, I remember our conversations and I know how much you and Randy Loved Lee and tried to help him as he struggled. I am heartbroken to hear about Leland's passing. He and I were dear friends when I was living in Boulder and  he was absolutely the most radiant human being-- a brilliant spirit who I feel honored to have loved. He exuded the most wonderful, joyful, caring, mature yet childlike energy and awe of the world. We were Bacaro family for years, and was a big brother to us all-- he looked after us, stood up for us, made us laugh, always greeted us with a giant bear-hug, or often in my case, throwing me over his shoulder and spinning me around in laughter. We connected as artists and shared our deep desire to make this world a more beautiful place-- to shine our artistic light on others always. We would talk at length about the challenges of being an artist and the immense but wondrous weight that came with a life committed to creativity. We practiced yoga together (I would always tease him about how impossible it was that someone of his sheer mass was able to balance upside on one hand so effortlessly). He modeled in my fashion shows (He would always find some way to strip off the shirt/jacket that he was modeling, and much to the delight of the audience, spin it around over head before leaving the runway). He was strong yet incredibly sensitive-- he navigated this world with such warmth and levity, yet with a depth and realness that was so beautifully honest, so Leland. He was a dear love of mine and I will forever carry a bit of him in my heart.

In my life, Leland is one of the very few people I can't help but remember.  Whether it's in a fleeting moment or a gesture of permanence, his character always offers a solid experience for those who find the pleasure of his acquaintance. A rare virtue in cynical times to be sure.  It's been a few years since I have spoken with Leland, yet I've never failed to gain strength from knowing that there was one like him in the world.  With this notion, there is both loss and respite.  Loss in knowing that  people will no longer have the chance to be affected as I have by his most genuine way of being, and relief in knowing that his residual presence still carries on with me as it has for so many years.   My best thoughts will be for his family in the coming days.

My thoughts and prays go out to Lee's family.  Several years back, we were visiting Boulder and didn't know that Lee was living there at the time.  We ran into Lee while we were there. He was shocked to see some old college friends and embraced us like we were the prodigal son.  He shared his open heart and spontaneous spirit with those around him.

To the Crow Family, while I didn't know him well - I did know that Leland was a genuine and heartfelt individual. Always kind in every passing with a great sense of humor. My heart goes out to your family.

I lived next door to Lee my sophomore year of college. He was a great guy and he will be sorely missed. He had such a great sense of humor and was a wonderful story teller. I've many fond memories of him.  I am very sorry for your loss, and you have my sincere condolences.

One of my best friends ever, Leland was always there if you needed his help. He bailed me out of plenty of tough spots no hesitation.
Just a loyal, stubborn, straight shooter, talented guy with a good heart. One of a kind and he will be missed.

Leland was a very special, authentic man with an enormous heart that touched many lives in positive ways. He was personally like a big brother to me, always knowing the right thing to say and a keen ability to "coach" me in any situation. I will never forget the many memories I had with him in Boulder. There are no words to explain the depth of sorrow I feel for Leland's departure or the ineffable pain many will carry in his absence. My heart hurts mostly for his family at this time. Leland was a good man; one the gentlest souls. Sometimes the brightest lights carrying a darkness we cannot know or understand... All I see is every kind moment I ever shared with him. Leland, you were/are loved and will be missed.

I didn't know Leland well at all. I would see him around town on his bmx bike, too short for his legs, or walking with his hoodie on his head. I always regarded him with warmth and affection. He was always kind when we spoke. He had such a sweet smile with a sparkle behind his eyes. I am sorry for his pain. I am saddened by our loss. Be well Leland!

Looking at the photo gallery in this Guest Book is testament to the love shared by the Crow family.  May the memories you have of Leland bring you comfort, solace and ultimately peace.  Our hearts and prayers are with you now and in the days to come.

My son, Stanley, considered Leland as the "older brother I didn't have."  but Leland was that older brother.  Younger son, Lech, climbed with him, and Stanley, just this last summer in the San Juan Mountains.
Leland was a brother of my sons for the last ten years.  My personal time spent with him was of such a mature, congenial, gentle giant of a man, who gave my sons the same gentle warmth of his caring being.  Yes, he was a "Giant" but with a heart full of love for life.
I instantly fell in love with his kindness, his contorted sense of humor with no malice, his caring for life.
Yes, I remain confused, but Leland was, to me, a beautiful spirit.  I wish his parents and friends PEACE, I wish the Universe would have more beings like him.
I am so sorry for this loss, and I wish his friends and parents Peace in their hearts for such a wonderful son, and "older brother" to my boys, my sons.
What a man.  As Stanley would often say, "A Man's Man."  I just knew Leland as a wonderful, sensitive, compassionate, passionate, man.
