She was born on March 11, 1956 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Audrey and Jerry Vederman. From a young age, she was a caretaker and a giver, helping her parents care for her two younger brothers. She moved to Houston in 1979, where she worked as a lab technician at Bellaire General Hospital shortly, before finding a sales job at US Telecom. After three years at US Telecom, she was recruited by Jerry Sellers, who she would marry 13 years later, to lead the sales team at his telecom startup.
Jerry was her best friend and mentor long before they knew they would start a family together. They were married on Mt. Baker in Washington in 1996 accompanied by Jerry’s best man and dog, George, as well as their first child Reed. Jerry and Maura had their second son Thomas in 1999. Maura had a deep and intense relationship with Jerry. He helped her see the world in a different way. And together, they became a powerful partnership.
In 1999 Maura helped found STOMP, a non-profit organization to teach Houston residents how to reduce the mosquito population without harmful pesticides. After seeing success with the program, Jerry and Maura took mosquito control efforts overseas, founding MosquitoZone International. The company helped reduce the incidence of Malaria and Dengue Fever in Africa and Papua New Guinea. After Jerry passed away in 2016, Maura assumed the role as CEO. She retired from the role in 2020.
Maura built lasting friendships through every stage of her life. She kept her friends close and loved them dearly. She wanted to make sure every friend knew how much she loved them.
Maura moved to Boulder, Colorado in 2022 to be closer to her sons. She loved walking local trails and enjoying wildlife with her dog Yogi. She had new friends and old friends over for dinner often and spent many joyous evenings with her kids.
Maura was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry R. Sellers, her parents, Audrey and Jerry Vederman, and her brother David Vederman. Maura is survived by her two sons, Reed and Thomas Sellers, her brother Michael Vederman, and her niece Rachel Vederman-Hubbard, as well as her dog Yogi.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Pathways Inpatient Hospice who provided not only high level medical care, but also heart warming kindness during her final days.
A memorial service will be held in Houston, Texas. For more details, please contact Reed Sellers by email at [email protected].
