As one of his nephews, I remember one of the last times seeing him in Colorado where he cheerfully greeted me and my brother James. He was my father‘s late fraternal twin. I remember him once telling me how he used to roughhouse with my father growing up after asking how my father rough houses with me. Those days have subsided, yet uncle Mike did share a sense of humor that I find dispersed throughout our family. Maybe it’s deeply rooted in the Irish struggle I am just learning about through ancestry; which incidentally led me to this page this many years after uncle Mike died. Eventually I’ll visit his cemetery in Colorado  were grandma Joanne his mother, and her ancestors are buried. Rest in peace uncle Mike. 

Mike was always present for actions in support of disability rights, and was a relentless advocate who could break right through baloney to the crux of the matter. I will miss him, and his activist's heart.

My sincere condolences go out to Mike's family during this time of loss. I had the pleasure to serve with Mike on the Colorado Developmental Disabilities Council for a number of years. He was engaging and witty and a tireless advocate for whatever the Council undertook. We have indeed lost a unique individual and he will be missed.

What I remember about Mike was his tales of civil disobedience on his many trips to DC and the bumper sticker on the back of his wheel chair that read "Gun Control Means Using Both Hands." The Navy has a saying that I would like to present in tribute from one Colorado Developmental Disabilities Council member to another, here's to you Mr. McCarthy: 
"May you always enjoy calm seas, fair weather, and following winds in your journey."

I was saddened to hear of Mike's passing. Mike was always informed about current issues, a great debater and passionately protective of the rights of people with disabilities.  It was an honor to serve with him on the Colorado Developmental Disabilities Council.  Mike you will be missed.

As a Canadian with Liberal views, Mike was always in my ears; but it was always with love and humor.  Waiting outside AT Partners, watching him do wheelies in his chair, hearing his stories from his navy days, or just shooting the breeze, Mike was a champion.  I'll miss his sarcasm and digging rebukes and two bottles of soda every time he rolled into the office.  Heaven got another good man!  R.I.P. Michael.

Mike brought strength, humor, and a touch of stubbornness to the Colorado Develomental Disability Council.  Your energy and perspectives will be missed!

Mike was a neighbor and he and I often found ourselves in conversation about his new computer or new TV, but he seemed most proud of his work with the Center for People with Disabilies.  Mike and I did not spend a lot of time together and still it's such a sad loss.  I knew that whenever I saw him, it would be a nice time.  He was a nice man and I will miss him.

Mike was passionate about making to world a better place for those of us in the disability community! He was strong in his beliefs and wasn't afraid to express them. He used his positive energy for good! Mike will be missed!

Mike was a man of strong conviction and the rare power to act. It was a great honor to work with him and call him a friend and a brother in action. He is joyously remembered and deeply missed. I am deeply sorry to lose Mike and wish to convey my Condolences to the family.

I will miss Mike. He was such a unique friend a truly passionate activist. I was shocked to hear that he died; I can't imagine what you are going through. I am so sorry for your loss.
