Ray Mason was born in Boulder, CO on November 8, 1925 to Mabel Allen and Charles Mason. He was the youngest of eleven children. After spending most of his youth in Boulder, he moved to Wiggins where he went to high school and became a “cowboy for life”.
At age 19 he met the love of his life, Melva Abernathy, and married her 6 months later. They spent the next 68 years together.
Ray loved being a cowboy, but always wanted a career as a police officer. Much to his delight, at age 35, he was offered a position with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Dept. and spent the next 29 years serving his community as an officer. He was a member of the original Board of Directors for The Boulder Valley Little Britches Rodeo. He was also a lifelong member of the Boulder Elks Club.
Ray was devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, and all-around great guy who would give you the shirt off his back. He was loved by everyone who knew him. He was bluntly honest, and famous for his chili, his huge, huge heart, and his many “tears” of love.
Mr. Mason is survived by his wife, Melva, his two devoted son, Rick (Debbie) and John, and their children Tina (Steve) Payne, Wendy (Courtney) Parker, Kelly (Steve) Davis, and Michelle (Shannon) Russum. He is also survived by great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins throughout Boulder County.
He was the most patient, selfless, warm, sympathetic, and loving man around. Ray will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
We love you and will miss you!
