Bob's name just popped into my head after these many years. I googled his name today and saw that he passed away in November. Sad to hear. I was just a college kid working on the NHRE project in 1976. Bob was our Supervisor. I noticed Gary Cox wrote a similar message. One of my funniest stories about that Summer was when we were all eating breakfast in kimball, ne.  Bob was telling us one of his many funny stories as he was cutting a large piece of ham. All of a sudden his fork slipped and the whole piece flew off his plate onto the floor. He didn't miss a beat on finishing his story and a minute or so later he asked to be excused so he could pick up the ham off the floor. It cracked everyone up. He wouldn't let anything interrupt his story. Bob was a funny and witty guy. I am sure his family and friends miss him.

Bob was my supervisor during the summer of 1976 working on NCAR's National Hail Research Experiment (NHRE). We worked out of Kimball, Neb. At that time I wasn't aware that Bob was a former Navy Senior Chief Aerographers Mate--I had been a lowly AG Second Class. That summer I couldn't have asked for a more knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and understanding person to work for. It was the best summer of my life, in large part due to Bob's presence.

My thoughts and prayers are with the whole McBeth family.  Mac was an extraordinary man, citizen, and neighbor.  He served his country, and, then, in civilian life participated in many civic activities, as mentioned by others.  In our neighborhood, he umpired Little League games, judged for Science Fair, kept local weather records for an academic institution, and umpired at the neighborhood school for the graduating class's softball game:  faculty vs. students. His eyesight may have been slightly impaired when calling balls and strikes on the faculty, favoring the students.  As a neighbor he was there for so many of us.  Need a fence repaired, grass watered, pets minded, a ride, or bicycle repaired, Mac was there, and if you tried to thank him, he responded, “that's what neighbors do.”  All of these contributions to the community, and more, he gave. Yet his family was always his primary concern and love.  He was happiest when spending tine with each of them and sharing life with Lee, a very special lady in his life, his wife.  His intelligence, his compassion, his wit made him a joy to be around.  I will miss him every day.  I am grateful to have known him and to have been his neighbor for so many delightful years.  My love and sympathy to all the McBeth family.

I feel so very fortunate to have had Grandpa Bob in my life for nearly 30 years.  I have so many wonderful memories of him that I will hold with me for the rest of my life.  

He set such wonderful examples of how to be a father and grandfather, and had such an amazing impact on this family.  I know even though he is no longer on the earth with us, his joyful spirit, and the love that he gave our family will continue live with us forever.

I'll miss you, Grandpa.

As the daughter of Bob's cousin Mel, I had only a handful of visits with my first-cousin-once-removed.  But I'll always remember Bob's warmth & kindness, which were shared with such genuine regard.  I remember his visit to attend my grandfather's memorial (his Uncle Willis).  He got to talking about sending up weather balloons in Tibet & it was such a lovely image to consider as we were bidding adieu to a soul.  I also enjoyed knowing that Bob was the son of a light keeper's daughter and that his father's brother married his mother's sister… on the same day.  From a small town on the rugged California coast, Bob ventured far & wide but always retained his down-home nature.  His gentleness & adventurous spirit will be remembered fondly.  Enjoy the weather up there, Bob!

We all have so much for which to thank and admire Mr. McBeth.  For me (his son in law, married to Valerie) there are too many examples to cite.  Among them are how much I appreciated his willingness to pitch in and assist in any home repair project Valerie and I might have, once he realized my lack of skill in this area.  He didn't make fun, he didn't condescend, he just rolled up his sleeves and made our lives so much easier.  

And thank you Mr. McBeth for leading such a unique and interesting professional life.  You accepted the opportunity to travel the world high and low, and enriched our lives with your wonderful accounts of the places you visited.  I will miss you, but you will continue to live on for all of us.

Bob was one of the most prolific but stable (they don't necessarily go together) people I ever worked with at NCAR.   His calm perspective and humor got us through many a tight field situation.  Couldn't ask for a better man to work with.

McBeth family, how lucky you were to have such a wonderful man in your life.  He was truly the most kindness man I have ever met.  I don't even know where to start to thank him for all the things he did for my father, and as a favor for me.   Thank you Bob!!  Our fathers were such good friends and after they both retired from NCAR they became even closer friends.  My Dad is missing him so much.  I will miss sitting at my Dads kitchen table chatting with your Dad.  He will be missed by so many.  Bob you are "Forever in so many Hearts".  ~gaylan~

Dear Grandpa, 

As a wonderful grandfather you taught me to always be there for and to love my family and friends. As a veteran, you taught me about being a man of honor. As a fine craftsman you taught me to take great care and patience in my work.  You taught me how to be a calm and collected golfer (a lesson I quickly forgot) and to be a good and safe driver (a lesson you later forgot).  I will never forget all the happy memories I have of you, and the funny stories about you that Grandma "Mendenhall" and the family will share around the dominos table; though there will always be sadness at the empty seat you leave behind.  I love you so much, and I can only hope to one day be as amazing a grandfather to my own grandchildren as you were to me.

I'll always think of Mr. McBeth when I hear the phrase "good neighbor."  He would frequently shovel his neighbors' sidewalks after a snowfall, which was such a help to my mom and dad.  My memories of 41st street wouldn't be complete without the image of Mr. McBeth walking his dog.  We were so lucky to share in the warmth of his kindness.

What a wonderful life he had.  Thank you for sharing so many beautiful details. He was a good friend to my parents and I am grateful for that. My thoughts are with you and your family, Lee.

Uncle Bob,

You were like a Grandfather to all of us Sills kids. Our yearly Thanksgiving trips to Boulder are some of my most cherished childhood memories. You filled each visit with laughter, fun, love, and you always taught me something new. Each year I looked forward to watching you work on bicycles, grow plants in your basement, or show me the latest computer. You were always so kind and patient with me.

You were such a wonderful man, and you will be missed by all of the people lucky enough to have known you.

You knew me since I was born. You were more then a neighbor and family friend, you were another father to me and Grandpa Mac to Alex, Gabe and Pete.

I will miss the way you would, in your loving way, with a sparkle in your eye tell me what I did wrong at golf.

I will miss your laugh, the way your beard tickled my face when you kissed me goodbye and your smile.

I will miss seeing you walk Mercy (or whatever dog was lucky to be in your life) up and down Table Mesa.

I will miss you terribly, thanks for helping me become the person I am today.

Dear Bob:  You began your life's journey 86 years ago in Crescent City, California and left this life in Boulder, Colorado.  In between these events, you traveled the world and lived in southern Oregon; Oakland, California; Leavenworth, Kansas; Trinidad and Tobago; Monterey, California and perhaps other places I can't remember.  You married your sweetheart, Lee and had three smart and beautiful children, John, Valerie, and Jeff and several grandchildren.  During these years you touch many, many people with your kindness, your wit, and your friendliness.  I was privileged, as one of your many cousins, to be with you on several family gatherings, birthdays, and milestone celebrations in Medford, Walnut Creek, and Las Vegas, and did we have fun!.  You were easy to talk to and laugh with, and I always enjoyed our times together.  I will miss you but I shall never forget you! Love,

Like many have mentioned in this lovely memorial, I also loved talking to Uncle Bob because his stories about our family and his work life were so very interesting. His Dad, our beloved Grandpa Mac, had a bit of a flair for fiction and tended to change stories a little every time he told them, and Uncle Bob would sometimes reveal the truth of things now and then, too. I loved hearing about Uncle Bob's trips, his interesting knowledge about our weather, and his childhood. He also listened so very carefully and took such a genuine interest in our lives and stories and photographs. Such a gentle, kind, and humor-loving spirit he shared with his family. We will all miss him so very very much.

I met Bob about five years ago on the golf course - where a person's character is quickly revealed. He was a kind, calm, sweet man who delighted in the accomplishments of his family and friends, and he loved dogs! After more golf and family gatherings that assessment never changed. He was such a good man! I'm going to miss him.

What a privilege and blessing to have such a wonderful, loving father-in-law.  I remember how he embraced me and the girls into the family.  I will miss the stories, the domino games, his jokes, and his appreciation of potstickers.  He will be missed so much and he will always be dear to my heart.

Bob was a true blessing to all of us.  The words that come to mind when I think of "Grandpa Bob" are gentleness of spirit, graciousness, kindness, easiness and GREAT fun.  His impish, quiet sense of humor poured sunshine into a room.  But at the same time you knew he really cared about you.  What a gift he was to us all.  I'm so thankful he was a part of our lives.

It has been an honor to have known this gracious and kind man. He has touched our lives in so many ways. 

Thanksgiving will never be the same without him giving the blessing. The good news, is his spirit will live on within his grandchildren.


He will always be in our hearts. We love you Bob.

We feel so blessed to have known this amazing man.

I loved that my dear Uncle Bob helped plant (4) fir trees in Adak Alaska (remote Navy base) and that when I was stationed there many years later I sent him a picture of me standing next to his forest.  I wish that I could have spent more time with him.  I know that he was met in heaven by his baby sister my Mom and they will be at peace together.

During any family gathering or reunion where both Bob and I attended, I always felt so comfortable in his warm presence. He was a kind and gentle soul coupled with his genuine friendliness and charming wit will forever remain a special memory.

I was so lucky to have such a wonderful brother.  He inspired me with his wonderful example as a father, a husband, a man.  He made me laugh, taught me some of his golf tricks, traveled to be with all of his family, lived a life of adventure and purpose.  I will miss him so much but my heart is filled with joyful memories of our times together.  He was truly a good man.

  I'm so sorry to hear about your dad's death.    When I read the notice in today's Camera, I couldn't believe it.  I had just seen your dad at church!
  In fact, on the last Sunday in October, I was thinking how much he probably enjoyed the bagpipes and drums.  So very Scottish.
  I also remember his work at NCAR and how he visited our displays at the 50th anniversary.   He lived quite a life!

Mr MCBETH was the picture of kindness; always willing to stop and have a chat with a welcoming smile. We have such fond memories of this gentle man! We feel your loss dear MCBETH family. May he rest in peace.

How lucky was I that he was my Dad. I'm counting on my broken heart of today to be healed down the road by the memories of his love, support and ability to goof around and make me laugh. Dad, you were absolutely the best and I will love you forever.
