Sandra S. Chen of Broomfield, Colorado died at the age of 81 in Louisville, Colorado on August 11, 2023 of heart failure.
Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1942 as Sung Chuan Chuan (宋娟娟), Sandy received a bachelor’s degree in English from Providence College in Taichung, Taiwan. Sandy moved to the United States in 1966 to attend graduate school at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Virginia, where she received her masters degree in Christian education. She lived in the Midwest in Ohio and Illinois for several years, before moving to Boulder, Colorado in 1979 where she raised her family and began her long career as an intercultural consultant, leading cross-cultural training programs for employees who were being sent abroad on assignment as expatriates. In 1992, she lived in Poughkeepsie, New York where she lived for a number of years until returning to the Boulder area in 2013.
Sandy was predeceased by her parents Tsung Wang and Ken Sung, and is survived by her husband Hsing Chen of Broomfield; her son Theodore (Ted) Chen and his wife Linna Shih of Boulder; her daughter Christine Chen and her husband Daniel (Dan) Rogart of Boulder; her grandchildren Cameron, Katherine (Kate), Noah, and Mia; and many other beloved friends and family members.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Boulder at 2pm MDT on Saturday, October 28, 2023. In lieu of flowers or other gifts to the family, please consider making a donation in Sandy’s memory to the charity of your choice, or one of the many causes Sandy supported, including the American Heart Association, Compassion International, Habitat for Humanity, Heifer International, or St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.
