

Shirley was born August 7, 1932 in Lake Forest, Illinois to Arbella Mable Laney Zieman and Irvin Henry Zieman. Shirley attended grade school in Half Day, Illinois. As a youth she babysat and did housecleaning. She was a clerk and soda jerk at Harry Taylor Drug Store in Libertyville, Illinois, a waitress at Chevy Chase Country Club in Half Day, Illinois, and a supermarket checker in Highland Park, Illinois. She graduated from Libertyville High School in 1950 and Bowling Green State University in Ohio in 1954 with a degree in Elementary Education. At the university she belonged to Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity, Beta Mu Chapter.
Shirley met her husband, Lester Charles Green, in an art class at Bowling Green. They were married on August 15, 1954 in Lake Forest, Illinois. They moved to Boulder, Colorado where they lived for 63 years. They then moved to Louisville, Colorado where Shirley resided for eight years; seven with her beloved dog, Poppy. Both Shirley and Les had extensive careers with the Boulder Valley School District.
Shirley and Les were members of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church since the fall of 1954. They were charter members. She and Les were sponsors for the high school youth group and Shirley taught Sunday School for 10 years. Shirley also enjoyed volunteering in the Deacon’s Closet.
Following their move to Boulder, Shirley taught first, second, and third grades at Edison Elementary for three years. Then for the next thirteen years she tutored in her home after school while she raised her four children. In addition to tutoring, she was a checker on the weekends for Joyce’s Supermarket and a cashier at the University of Colorado Bookstore.
When Eisenhower Elementary was built in her neighborhood in Boulder, she taught 3rd and 5th grades from 1971 until her retirement in 1992. After retirement Shirley spent the next twenty years as a substitute teacher. When she moved to Louisville, she was a volunteer in her daughter Debra’s classroom.
Shirley is survived by a son, Daniel I. Green (Susie) of Firestone; three daughters, Debra Green of Berthoud, Dayna Green of Arvada, and Deanna Green (Scott Bradley) of Louisville; five grandchildren, Tiffany Heisler (John) of Erie, Benjamin Carter (Lisa) of Broomfield, Keith Carter (Ashlie), of Okinawa, Japan, Josiah Green and Hannah Green of Firestone; eight great-grandchildren, Veronica Mireles, Claire Carter, Toby Carter, Michael Carter, Baylee Carter, Logan Carter, Jaqueline Carter and Mikayla Heisler. She is preceded in death by her husband, Les, a son, Daniel Charles Green, her parents, and a brother, Richard Zieman.
