Sigvard Stenlund (Sig) was born June 10, 1932 in Redwing MN to John Stenlund and Lily Gustafson Stenlund. He joined the marine corp in 1952. He was trained as an aviation electronic technician. He repaired radios etc. on helicopters. He completed MAD, NATTC in Memphis TN. He shot the M1 rifle and was awarded as an expert rifleman. He was honorably discharged on Nov 3, 1955. He received his bachelors’ degree in physics from St. Olaf in Northfield, MN.
Sig worked as an engineer at GT Sheldahl developing the first super pressure balloon for the US air force. He worked as an engineer at NCAR for 24 years retiring in 1994. He designed and developed weather balloons and parachutes for atmospheric testing and research.
His hobbies were model trains and rockets, he was a member of the NRA and enjoyed target shooting, and woodworking. As a member of Mt Hope Lutheran church, he volunteered for various jobs. His greatest love was for Jesus and his eternal life in Heaven.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Betty Jean (Norton) Stenlund, also Debra Cope, Ronald and wife Tammie Stenlund, Kristi Ross, Debra Werth Barker and husband Larry, six grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Arne; son in law, George, daughter, Julie; and grandson, Timothy.
He was loved by many close friends. He will be missed by all.
