How has it possibly been two years?? It feels like moments ago. I miss you so very much. My pain is still raw. I long to hug you, hold you, hold your hand, talk to you, ask for your help & advice, hear your life stories, adventures & experiences. How I long for you to give me a back rub or smile at me. It rained yesterday afternoon and after the few minute storm, there was a magnificent double rainbow! My heart felt warm because I felt you. You would have loved it. A plane flew over the double rainbow as I was looking at it and it made me wonder what rainbows look like from Heaven where you are. Today at 12:47pm will be a very difficult moment. I cherish all my memories of you, I love you, I continue to try to keep your legacy alive - mom too - and I beg you to wait for me in Heaven. Thank you for everything you taught me, all your wisdom - you were the wisest person I know - all your support, but most of all, thank you for your unconditional love. I am the luckiest girl in the world to have had you as my precious beby YiaYia and I will forever cherish you, the AMAZING woman you were, and our love and memories. 

Today I cry extra because I miss you so much. My heart hurts. I just wish you were still here on Earth to share more time together. You always said your brother Thomas told you that no matter how long you have with someone it's never enough. Well, beby mou, YiaYia Voula, I feel that more than ever today. You were a true Angel on Earth, and we were all blessed to have you in our lives.

Just discovered our Voula is gone.  Sorry I didn't know earlier.  I feel like a family member, however, I hope they still love me.  I will remember Voula, and everyone else in the family forever!! Voula was truly on of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met. She was so warm and caring. She was an amazing cook, who never let you leave the table hungry. She was so loving she felt like everyone’s Yaya.

When my family and I moved to Colorado, we met Voula & her family at the Greek Orthodox Church of Boulder. From the moment I met Voula, I realized that she was a loving, good Christian. Voula always followed God’s path, and dedicated her whole life to her family. She loved everyone. Voula’s big good deed over the last 35+ years was making the Prosphoro every Saturday for church. She used to say “I promised God that for as long as I live, the Church will always have Prosphoro made by Voula Skodras!” Many times she wondered if her children, grand-children and great-grand-children would continue the good deed of making the Prosphoro for Church every Saturday. Voula was one of a kind and helped everyone around her with love and nobility. There are so many stories Voula shared with me about her life in Greece & America. May Voula’s Memory Be Eternal. She will always be with us, watching over us from Heaven.

We are so sorry for the loss of Mama Voula. She was a wonderful, loving presence in our lives for forty years! She and Gus always treated us like royalty at the Aristocrat, and later at Voula's. 

In the old days, while feasting on the Nick's Special Omelette and a stack of Blueberry Pancakes, Gus would go in the back and bring us the secret stash of Greek Anchovies. What a riot of sounds and smells we enjoyed there, and the food was the best!

Voula was indeed a Mother to me and my family. Her family is my family.

She is sorely missed.

      I'm sure your hearts are heavy with grief at the loss of sweet Voula.
       I first met Voula while working for Dr. Welker at his dental practice in the late 80's.  At that initial meeting one could feel the love and warmth that she emanated.
      The true task for your family is to carry on her legacy...foremost, to exhibit her fervent love of God and family. Her warmth, kindness, generosity and excellent  cooking skills far exceed one's best expectations of any one person.
      One day many years ago , Christine was in the office wearing the most beautiful hand knit scarf.  I commented on the attractiveness of her scarf and she replied that Voula had made the scarf.  To my surprise, Christine said, " I'll have Voula make one for you."  Low and behold,  a few weeks later I was gifted this beautiful scarf from Voula.  I still wear this scarf in cold weather and receive many compliments.  What is most significant is that when it's blustery cold and I'm wearing that scarf,  I literally can feel Voula's warm hug 
surround me...so comforting!
     It was a privilege beyond words to have known her and to be acquainted with her amazing family!

Yaya Voulas has forever left me an indelible memory of a lady, bright eyed, energetic, kind, thoughtful, selfless. She is one of the few persons in the world that has touched my heart, and hearts of many who happened to share her path, however long or short. I was fortunate to have known her for a very precious period of time, I can not think of one single occasion when she put herself ahead of others, either her family or a stranger who she happened to interact with.  She  gave and gave, to her family, to many others, to a random stranger - it was the single most joy she enjoyed.  

She showed us the kind of the love and kindness that gives hope, holds us all together.

If a sainthood could ever be raised by a layman,  I would dare to say I, and along with many others that came across her path, would do so without the slightest of hesitation.

I will forever remember her.

Voila was an extraordinary woman who was kind, warm, and generous. Whether it was at the Aristocrat or at Voula’s restaurant or at an impromptu encounter, she would always greet us with her radiant smile, welcoming us as if we were family. Rarely did she miss the chance to send us on our way with giant containers of treats making sure we had plenty to eat throughout the week. We were lucky to be recipients of such goodness. She will be missed so much by so many.

     It was '74 or '75 when my brother and I rolled down the mountain into Boulder. We had $3 and needed to find work. The second day my brother decided to hitch hike home.  We split the money and I can still see him going off into a storm with no jacket. The next day I found The Aristocrat Steakhouse with a help wanted sign. Voula asked me if I had experience and tested me by telling me to cook an egg over easy, I broke it and she put another one on and showed me how to do it. She  put them on a plate with potatoes, toast and bacon and told me to eat. I was so happy. I was hired and stayed there for several years. Those years at the Aristocrat are some of my most memorial. I think of them all the time. Years later when my sister went to the University, Voula and Julie welcomed her into their home. After 40 ish years I still look forward to their Christmas card 

What a sweet wonderful woman she was.  First remember her, Gus and Nick at the Aristocrat.  They were always there and watching Voula engaging with everyone, rich or poor and just loving people in general.  Of course hearing Gus and Nick yell across the restaurant which always made us laugh, but not Voula, as she was the calming influence, maybe not behind the scene, ha!ha!  
As a police officer, I was one of many officers who always went there for breakfast or lunch.  She made sure we were well fed and come to our table and chat, very loving.  When the three of them opened their other restaurant at 18th/Pearl, there she was again.  We would go in there away from work and spend time chatting, eating and drinking, always making sure we were well taken care of, she was like our other mom.  I have missed not seeing her and the rest of the family since restaurants have closed and I retired.  Our thoughts and sympathy go to the entire family and our love.  She will be missed by a LOT of people through out the community.  

There are so many things to say and so many wonderful memories of Yiayia Voula.  She was like a second mother to me and called me son. I met Voula, Gus, Julie and Nick June of 1976. My cousin took me to the Aristocrat and all of them were there.  She offered me food and coffee, like she did all her life with everyone she met. Sometime later, I started working at the aristocrat and I worked there  for 4-5 years. I also spent a lot of time at her house for dinners and most of all Sunday nights since that was the night the restaurant was closed early. After a rough day, she would send Nick to pick me up so we would have dinner together as a family (along with the Welkers and some other friends). Over time, I used to try and surprise her with my visits so she didn't make a multi course meal, but even then she would continue to serve and offer whatever she could. I just loved going and talking with her.
She always loved when I visited, either by myself or with my kids. I could write a book with all the memories I have of Voula, and I will cherish all the wonderful memories I have. Yiayia Voula will be missed and will be in my heart.

I, too, had the privilege of working with Gus, Voula, Nick, Julie and the crew at the Aristocrat back in the 80s and I will never forget the warmth, love, and feisty energy that Voula brought into the restaurant and into everyone's lives. Voula was like a second Yiayia to me! I spent about two weeks with Yiayia Voula one summer (~2010?) while visiting my precious Noná Julie.  Yiayia spent time giving me a tour of her backyard garden, cooking amazing and unforgettable food, and explaining to me (in very broken English) all about how much she dislikes “Bambas” (aka President Obama).  Needless to say, there was lots of laughter! I should also note that I had my first glass of wine at Yiayia’s house one Greek Easter at age 13, and experienced tipsiness for the first time, before falling asleep on her guest bed. Unforgettable times!!! I loved every second of the time I spent with her, and I cannot wait to see her someday in heaven! Lots of love to my Greek God-family during this difficult time.

We have known Voula since we moved to Boulder in 1976. We, and everyone, will remember her kindness and friendship. She was always there for her family, Church, and friends.

I remember Voula always had a warm and welcoming smile for me and my girls, and made sure we got the freshest slice of bread.

In loving memory of, Voula Skodras, or, as I knew her and called her, "Momma!"  What a special person Momma was, and is.  She was an angel who lived among us, and who exemplified love, caring and friendship everyday of her life.

Every time I met Momma, she always greeted me with a loving smile, grabbed my hands in hers, and would say, "How's everybody, good-good?"   She would then seat you, and did everything she could to make your meal the best it could be.  And, as busy as Momma was, she always made the time, took the time to sit down and visit with you.  It was during our conversations, I learend how special Momma was.  Her love of God and her family were so strong, so important to her, they were what she lived for and brought her the most happiness.  But Momma's heart was so big, she cared and loved every one.  Momma is gone but she will never be forgotten, and her love will live on!  In closing, I would like to say, "Thank you Momma for all you did, and, for all you gave to us;  for being part of my life, and I, yours."

I look forward to the time when we shall meet again, and I'll hear you say "How's everybody, good-good!"

Thea Voula was a kind, loving, generous and very special person.  I will always remember the times we were able to visit Thea Voula and Uncle Gus in Boulder, along with Julie and Nick. The love and generosity was  prevalent from everyone. Thea Voula was always so generous with her love, caring and hospitality. She  seemed very happy and positive no matter the situation. 

I still remember the first time meeting Thea Voula and the rest of the family in Larissa when I was a boy visiting Greece with my family. Everyone made us feel like they had known us forever and the love was so apparent, and Thea Voula was certainly a leader of those feelings. 

When the family moved to Milwaukee and we could see them more often, it was great.  Getting to spend more time with Thea Voula and the rest of the family was a blessing and those are times that I will always cherish. 

I wish we could have visited more often as time went on. I miss Thea Voula and Uncle Gus and they will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope to have a chance to visit Julie, Nick, Dave, Christine, Jay and their families in the future and reminisce about Thea Voula and those times with her and Uncle Gus.

I have so many wonderful memories of time spent with our Yiayia. Too many to share. I remember all the time spent in the restaurants. I remember all the visits to Yiayia's house.  I remember the hammocks we broke (Yiayia never got upset). I remember the meals and the conversations. I remember the time I made the mistake of eating before a visit. I remember watching the Greek news as a kid after we ate. I remember Yiayia always greeting us and waving goodbye from the front stoop. But most of all I remember the genuine love and kindness of Yiayia Voula. I wasn't her grandchild by blood but that never mattered. She emanated love and caring. She shared this with so many people. We continue to miss her, but she is in a better place with pappou Gus.  Rest in Peace. Love you Yiayia!

There is no other way to describe Yiayia, other than saying she was the best! All my life I've considered the Skodras and Welker families my extended family and Yiayia was the true matriarch. She loved with everything she had and always gave to others. She had such pride in her family it was palpable listening to her talk. Her faith and love of God and the church were always evident in everything she did. I have so many wonderful memories of growing up at her restaurant, playing at her house and eating (endlessly) when visiting! I am blessed to be been part of this family and to have had her as my Yiayia. Forever in my heart ❤ and memories. I will love and miss Yiayia Voula.

Starting at age 16, I worked for Gus, Voula, Nick and Julie at the Aristocrat for seven years -- from 1975 to 1981. Despite having no experience as a waitress, the Skodras family gave me a chance. This was in large part because of my father, Bud Zorichak (aka "Budovic" to the Greeks). His office was just a few doors down from the ’Crat. 

Anyone who ever ate at the Aristocrat knew that working there wasn’t easy. I often joked that I was the only employee who lived at home and who wasn’t supporting a boyfriend or a drug habit or both. I enjoyed a special place in that crazy hierarchy though, not only because I was Bud’s daughter but also because I worked hard, could dodge the food flying off the grill (and the occasional air-born platter) – and I spoke Spanish. Rarely a day went by when I wasn’t enlisted to translate from Voula’s heavily Greek-infused English to explain something to the mostly Hispanic dishwashers.

And according to Voula, I could do no wrong. Grabbing my cheeks, she would often say even decades later, “Mama love Suzanna! Never make mistakes.” On a few occasions when I came in a bit bedraggled for my 6 a.m. shift, Voula would look at me, wipe her hands on her apron, and say, “Tsk, tsk, tsk. Too much cha, cha, cha, eh Suzanna?” I still use that phrase – in Voula’s accent – whenever the opportunity presents itself. 

As time went on, my role at the Aristocrat evolved from being a waitress to becoming a member of the family.  Working there paid for most of my college education. It taught me skills that I never thought I’d need. To this day, it also gives me nightmares about being the only waitress in the place when those 27 tables filled up. 

Working at the Aristocrat was not easy, but it was an adventure. And it wasn’t the money or the short white uniforms or the smell of onions and peppers embedded in my hair, skin and clothes that kept me going back. It was Gus and Voula and Nick and Julie. And that love has endured for nearly 50 years.

Our blessed Yiayia will be in our hearts and memories forever.  She was an example of faith, strength, and humility for all of us to follow.  The time we had with her will be our treasure and we know she's in a better place looking down on us.  May her memory be eternal.

My sweet Yia Yia...I was always touched by our Voula's beautiful soul, genuine smile, and joyful laugh. I spent many afternoons alone with YiaYia when I would pick up our dog Wilson from her house. She would watch him while my husband Costa and I were at work or school. We would have conversations in "Greeklish" and she would tell me stories of her past in Greece. She provided many valuable life lessons for me- filled with kindness, generosity and hard work. I always loved hearing her stories. She liked to tell me about when she was a "nurse" in Greece, and she would give people in her village shots in exchange for vegetables or milk. During wartime in Greece as a young woman, she refused money from the American soldiers who she allowed to stay in her house. She always made sure the "hippies" (i.e. Boulder's homeless population) were fed. She was a true angel. I am honored to have loved her and to have been loved by her. She was a gift to us all and I miss her daily.

I have known the Skodras family for many years and am blessed to call them part of my family. Gus and Voula would come into the Aristrocrat around 5:00 in the morning to prepare for the day and would open early to myself and other police officers who frequented the restaurant. Voula will be remembered by me always for her telling me: "eat more food, you're too skinny."
When they sold the Aristrocat and opened Voula's restaurant I followed and enjoyed some of the most exquisite Greek food that Voula prepared.
Voula was very dedicated to Gus and was devastated when he passed to be with the Lord. 
Voula has left a void in my life and she and the family will always be remembered with fond memories. May she rest in peace with her beloved Gus.

The first Greek word I learned was "Fooskosa"(to be full)! I have remembered that word for the last 50+ years! During Dave & Julie's engagement, and while Dave was back on the USS Ranger aircraft carrier, I was the one to drive from Dayton to Milwaukee to meet our future family, as my parents couldn't leave Dad's store at that time. Voula & Gus, who hadn't learned English yet, had recently left their homeland to be with Julie & Nick. Even with the language barrier, Voula was such a dear...and a hoot! At the dining table I would turn my head to the left to talk to Julie only to turn back & find my empty plate was mysteriously piled high! Again! Julie or Nick taught me the word "Fooskosa", but Voula wasn't buying it! I finally had to lie and say I didn't like whatever she was serving, which was hard to do as everything she cooked was delicious. Voula wasn't buying that either...the piles of delicious food kept coming. Many of us have similar experiences of her loving generosity.

Too many endearing stories & precious memories of Voula over the past 50+ years, but when I saw her last, 3 years ago in Boulder, she would call me "Koukla" (doll). From then on whenever I talked to her I would call her Koukla....Voula was the beauty. A truly beautiful soul which profoundly touched us all. 

Our family was blessed to live across the street from lovely Voula for over twenty years.    When we first moved to Butler Circle, she showered our two and five year olds with love, flowers, candies and hugs.     Voula never stopped being a source of joy throughout our years here.    Our hearts are bigger having known Voula and we will miss her and the bright light and love she shared.

Voula was a patient in our office for several years, and one of our "Favorites" at that! Although she had suffered many things in her life, she always had a smile for anyone who she met, and she always was encouraging and kind. Voula was quick to acknowledge her faith in God and His help throughout her life. She will be greatly missed, but Heaven gained a true treasure.

I fondly remember and loved Voula, who will always be YiaYia to me and so many others. She was incredibly kind and loving, generous with her hugs, and always making sure that everyone was well-fed. One of my favorite memories was when she gave me a pair of hand crocheted slippers that she made. I hope that she if finally resting in peace with her husband. My heart is broken for the family, especially Julie and Christine. 

I had the privilege of being Voula’s hospice nurse. She exuded warmth, generosity, and love from the moment I met her. 
I remember during our visits she would give life advice and share stories from her past. Her radiant smile always made my day. It was a blessing to have the opportunity to meet such an extraordinary woman who touched so many lives including mine. The memory of Voula will always stay dear to my heart. 

So sad to hear of Voula's passing, she was a legend in Boulder 

So many, many, many years of enjoyment at the Aristocrat.  And of course the delicious Greek meals at Voula's. Thank you Voula, Gus, Nick and Julie for giving Boulder so much.

Sometime in the spring of 1982 when I was a sophomore at CU, I was walking along Baseline Road in Boulder and heard Greek spoken.  I turned around and saw  two ladies with two young children (Voula with her daughter Julie and her two grandchildren) and when I talked to them in Greek Voula was so thrilled and invited me to their restaurant (the Aristocrat).  I was so amazed by the warmth of the invitation that I immediately called my family in Greece to let them know.  Warmth and generosity are the first words that come to mind when I think of Voula. No matter what, when she saw me (and, later, my family) she treated me like part of the family and she felt like family to me, a home away from home.  Thank you Voula, and may the memory of your generosity and goodness be eternal. 

When I was on Boulder PD, I would check on the restaurant, (the Aristocrat) very early in the morning when I saw Voula and company in to start their day. Voula would always invite me in for a cup of coffee. She would then excuse herself for a few minutes only to return with my coffee as well as a plate or two of food. I would tell her that I was not hungry but she would tell me that I was to skinny and I needed to eat more. So I would gladly eat the goodness presented to me by this beautiful woman and then excuse myself back into the night and the streets of Boulder. I always enjoyed every visit to the Aristocrat and Voula's, mainly to see Voula and for the best food in Boulder! Thank you Voula, I will find you on the other side. Barry Mosley

Με σεβασμό και δέος υποκλινόμεθα στην προσωπικότητα σας. Τι να πρωτοδειδαχθούμε από τον βίο σας και την συμπεριφορά σας. Είχες το θείο χάρισμα να συνδυάζεις με μαεστρία τις αντιθέσεις της ζωής.
Ήσουν ήρεμη και καλοσυνάτη αλλά και δυναμική.
Διατήρησες μια μητριαρχική Ελληνική οικογένεια μετά τον θάνατο του αγαπημένου σας συζύγου.
Ήταν ζηλευτή η ταπεινότητα σας σε σχέση με την αρχοντιά σας.
Η προσφορά σας χωρίς αντάλλαγμα.
Η άδολη αγάπη σας αλλά και αυστηρότητα όταν χρειαζόταν.
Η υπομονή και καρτερικότητα σας παραδειγματική.
Τις ευχές σας θα τις έχουμε παρακαταθήκη στο υπόλοιπο της ζωής μας.
Καλό παράδεισο αγαπημένη μας κυρία Βούλα.
Δεν θα σας ξεχάσουμε ΠΟΤΕ.

My favorite memories of my Yiayia were visiting her on Saturday's  and watching her bake dozens of loaves of bread.

She came into our lives in the 80’s and has had a place in our hearts and stomachs ever since.  She was always smiling and over showering everyone with such delicious meals, could never take no for an answer and would just pile on more baklava.   Voula was the most thoughtful, caring, and loving woman and will be missed by everyone she touched.

Our dearly beloved Voula is synonymous with love. She was also truly the most authentic person I have ever known .
Her essence will surely be missed by so many who adore her.
