I only heard of Walt's passing 10 months later. Since our summer in Haiti more than 3 decades ago, Walt was always a faithful correspondent, writing back to me any time I read an article about the country and asked him for his perspective and insight. This past year I thought it odd that he didn't write back to me. I now know why. I will miss him and regret that I didn't have the opportunity to see him face to face in so many years, although he was never far away through email. I was never his student, but he still seemed like my teacher.

When I first moved out to Colorado after college, I joined a young adult's small group. When I walked in, true to what I had heard, there was Walt, a committed member of the group. Everyone else in the room was a few decades younger than him, and certainly had many miles to go before we could even attain to a fraction of the wisdom and insights he had, but he had joined out of a desire to continue to be involved with our generation. I was so inspired by his humility and investment. I had the deep privilege of continuing to be a part of the same church family as Walt for years to come, and I am forever grateful for his impact in my life!

Walt Baker was among the most personable and caring  teachers at Dallas Seminary...more interested in "writing epistles on hearts than books" he noted. Walt  took three of us senior DTS students to East Texas on an extremely winter-weather weekend and gave us a chance to preach at a missions conference there where friendship began have lasted over 40 years. 
After our return to New Delhi, he and Dottie stay with us, taught our congregation a beautiful Creole song in his deep baritone voice with Dottie's alto. He also began to affirm President Dr. Campbell's  idea of a teaching career at Dallas Seminary. 
Among the major streams to help finalize that decision, along with an international mechanism for a global ministry footprint, I am also grateful to Walt for taking me to Haiti to speak at a major convention which has since drawn me/us to his beloved, broken but vibrant land in many ways over the years. 
We are so very thankful for their collegiality and hospitality. With our heartfelt condolences for the entire Baker family.

Walt led a Bible study that we attended in the 1970's in Lancaster, PA.  He taught us wonderful perspectives from the book of Nehemiah and encouraged us to visit Haiti in order to see how God works in the lives of people in a culture different from our own.  
Walt was instrumental in our visits to Haiti where we eventually served with UFM International for most of the 1980's.  
He was a amazing teacher and spiritual leader.
