Agnes Clare Watkins, 96, died peacefully at her home on Thursday, October 14, 2021. She was born April 3, 1925 in Washington, Indiana to James and Dorothy (McCauley) Mahan.
Employment: At age 14, Agnes worked as an upstairs maid; at a parachute factory and as telephone operator at Camp Atterbury in Indiana during WWII; at Watkins Motor Co. in Washington, Indiana in 1948. In 1961, she moved to Bradenton, Florida where she was co-owner and book keeper of Watkins’ Used Cars. She also worked at the Manatee County Tag Office for a short time.
Family: She married Fred L. Watkins on April 12, 1949. Surviving her are three children residing in Bradenton, Florida: William Michael Watkins (Jeanne-deceased), James Fredrick Watkins (Theresa), and Mary Ann Watkins, three grandchildren: Joseph R. Watkins (Kim) of Bradenton, Eric J. Watkins (Jessica) of Fort Benning, GA and Brett I. Watkins (Caitlin) of Austin, Texas, three great-grandchildren: Logan and Alexis [Eric J. Watkins (Jessica)] and Willow [Brett I. Watkins (Caitlin)]
Agnes belonged to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church since 1961. She was a lifetime member of the Council of Catholic Women (CCW) where she held offices of first vice-president and treasurer. She was in charge of the prayer line, membership, and worked at the bingo games and spaghetti dinners.
Visitation will be held Sunday, October 24th, 5-8 pm at Robert Toale and Sons at Manasota Park with a funeral mass at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church Monday, October 25th, 10 am followed by burial at Manasota Memorial Park.
A Special Memorial Mass will be said for Agnes Watkins at St. Peters Catholic Church in Montgomery, Indiana at 10am on Monday Oct. 25th. It will be live streamed on Facebook.
