Elizabeth “Betty” Chudy (born January 14, 1923), passed away peacefully on November 5 at age 98 in Bradenton, Florida, at the Best Care home where she had resided for several years. She was pre-deceased by Stan, her adoring husband of 66 years, who passed away in 2009.
Born in Chicago as Elizabeth Katherine Sisol, Betty spoke only Hungarian for her first few years, as her parents had emigrated from Eastern Europe. She went on to be a top student and a member of the Honor Society, graduating from Harrison High School in 1939 and then went on to graduate from Chicago Teachers College. She taught first in Chicago and then in the Bradenton at Bayshore Elementary and Sugg Middle School. She was known for both her personal warmth and enthusiasm, as well as the high quality of her teaching.
When the family moved to Bradenton in 1953 Betty embraced her new life completely, not only performing her teaching duties but raising her children and immersing herself in the community. She retired in 1983. Her volunteer activities ranged from the Garden Club to Friends of the Library, and she became President of the Manatee County Retired Educators Association. She also volunteered for the Laubach Literacy Program, and spent hours teaching English to immigrants. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, Scrabble, the Kings in the Corner card game, and Trivial Pursuit.
Her survivors include her three loving children and their spouses: Loren (Jan), of Daglan, France; Karen (Mark Lassman), of Weston, Florida; and Debby (Fred Baglini), of Sarasota, Florida as well as her six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren
She will be interred at the Manasota Memorial Park with her late husband.
Arrangements entrusted to Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Manasota Memorial Park, 1221 53rd Ave E, Bradenton, FL 34203, 941-755-2688.
