Joan Phyllis Hamilton

Joan P. Hamilton passed away on August 10, 2026, at the age of 96. Joan was born in Midwest, Wyoming, to William and Amelia Leenhouts. Joan graduated from the University of Wyoming where she met her partner in life, the late William A. Hamilton.

Joan built a respected career as an accountant in the Washington, D.C. area, where her skill, discretion, and steady professionalism earned the trust of a wide range of clients—including several Washington Redskins players and the fledgling C-SPAN news network. Away from work, she was a true card sharp, with a gift for nearly every card game she played and a particular talent for bridge. She played exceptionally well and shared that love with others by teaching bridge lessons at her retirement home. A lifelong basketball fanatic, Joan was well known for her love of the game and not being available for anything else during March Madness. She was also an excellent friend: loyal, funny, generous with her time, and engaged with her neighbors, her community, and her church. She maintained her quick wit and sharp mind until very near the end, a reflection of the intelligence and spirit that defined her life.

Joan is survived by her three daughters, Janet Hamilton and her husband, Charles Culbertson; Joyce Roller and her husband, Kenneth Roller; and Jill Hamilton and her husband, Randy Koonce. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Cathryn Hoffmann, Erich Hoffmann, Nicholas Hoffmann, and Shelby Roller.

A memorial service will be held at a future date at All Saints Anglican Church in Arden, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Resurrection House or to Tidewell Hospice, both in Sarasota, Florida.
