A memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Manasota Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Bradenton.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife Dawn Logan and daughter Lesley Schneider. Survivors include his son John, Jr., (Mary), grandchildren Shaun L. McGruder, Megan M. Stephens, Erin M. Helms, James A. Schneider and Jonathan I. Schneider, and eight great-grandchildren.
Born in Iowa City, John was a senior at Drake University when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. After becoming an officer, he was assigned to the Sarasota Air Base, where he met Dawn. Married three weeks later, he left almost immediately to serve three-and-a-half years in the European Theater. He returned to earn his M.A. at the University of Chicago before moving to Washington, D.C., where he pursued a long and highly successful federal career. He retired from the Senior Executive Service. He also retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Air Force Reserve and taught at American University for more than 20 years.
