Born November 8, 1937, in Essex County, New Jersey, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Bronson Nugent and Myrtle Adelaide (Harris) Nugent and grew up on Paulinskill Lake, near Newton, New Jersey. As a young woman, she was a seasonal lifeguard and participated extensively in 4-H, where she met her future husband, Robert Armstrong. In the summer of 1955, she had the honor of representing New Jersey as a 4-H delegate in Washington, D.C.
Carolyn was a proud 1959 graduate of Douglass College, then part of Rutgers University. That summer, she married Robert, beginning a marriage and partnership that lasted more than 63 years.
Carolyn and Bob raised their three children in Talbot County, Maryland, where Carolyn was active in the community as an educator and continued her support of 4-H. She devoted herself to her family and enthusiastically supported her children’s many activities. She also shared Bob’s love of the water and enjoyed boating and Log Canoe racing as part of their life on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
In retirement, Carolyn and Bob enjoyed traveling together and living on the water. They later lived in Onancock, Virginia, before moving to Mallard Landing in Salisbury, Maryland.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Bronson Nugent and Myrtle (Harris) Nugent, and by her husband, Robert Armstrong, in 2022. She is survived by their three children, Robin Adelaide Armstrong of Snow Hill, Maryland; Bronson Armstrong and spouse of Orlean, Virginia; and Scott Armstrong and spouse of Falls Church, Virginia. She is also survived by five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
