Charles was born on August 20, 1944, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania to Lauren K. Hagaman and Irene (Vail) Hagaman. He was a graduate of Millburn High School and resided in Short Hills and Sparta, New Jersey, for most of his life. He primarily worked in the field of computers.
Charles was known for his love of speed and adventure. He raced both cars and bobsleds. An avid motorcyclist, he continued to ride well into his mid-70s. He was particularly fond of winter sports and devoted countless hours watching his recordings of winter Olympic events. Charles especially enjoyed many trips to Lake Placid, NY, where he could pursue these endeavors. He was also known for long cross-country skiing excursions in the woods that lasted past dark.
In addition to his love for sports, Charles loved rock and roll music and attending outdoor concerts. His family will remember him as a master of the grill and frequent patron of local diners, where he savored his favorite comfort foods.
Charles is survived by his sister, Beverly Kretschmer; his son, Gregory Hagaman; his daughters, Merrilee Durrwachter (Michael), and Marissa Melone (Mike). Also known as Grandpa Charlie, he leaves behind his five grandchildren: Shane Hagaman, Katrina Durrwachter, Kyle Durrwachter, Riley Melone, and Jacqueline Melone. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Paul Kretschmer.
