Born in Jersey City on May 10, 1951, Gary devoted his life to serving his country, community, and fellow citizens. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in November 1969, bravely serving as a Recon Marine during the Vietnam War until August 1971. After his Honorable Discharge, Gary served with distinction as a firefighter for the Jersey City Fire Department, proudly working on Ladder 7, Engine 14 and Engine 18 during a remarkable 29-year career. He retired on March 1, 2010, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and commitment to public safety.
Gary was the co-owner of Hot Rocks Wood Stove store in Branchville, New Jersey and his dedication to serving his community extended well beyond his professional life. He volunteered for the American Red Cross, served as commander of VFW Post 3478 in Netcong, served many years on the board of the Homeowner’s Association of High Point Community, and was actively involved in numerous military organizations. Gary was also an internment officer for Sussex County until December of 2024.
Gary’s unwavering dedication to serving his country and community will forever be remembered, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness, bravery, and compassion that has touched countless lives.
Gary leaves fond memories to his beloved wife, Ann McCardle; his daughters Lynne McCardle, Jeanette McCardle, Jennifer Smith, Jessica McCardle; his siblings Marilyn McClure, Kevin McCardle, and Rosemarie Massari; and eleven loving grandchildren.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents James and Marilyn (Wilson) McCardle; his sister Michelle Marion; his brothers James McCardle and Thomas McCardle.
