Gregory was born in Newton, NJ to the late Gregory DeVita and Elvira (Pennacchio) DeVita. Before settling in New Jersey, he also lived in Pennsylvania and Washington. Gregory attended Belknap College in New Hampshire earning a bachelor’s degree in electronics. He took over his father’s appraisal company and worked as a Real Estate Appraiser for more than 40 years prior to retiring in 2010. Gregory also worked as a bartender at Dempsey’s, the family restaurant, in Sandyston in his younger years.
Gregory had an impeccable sense of humor, always ready to make someone laugh or even push their buttons a bit with his sarcasm. He had a way with people and would build connections with just a short conversation. Gregory was the President of the Resident Council at Barn Hill where he was well-known for his outgoing personality. He loved music and exercised his talent as an amateur Bassist. Gregory was a sports enthusiast which included him playing many sports in his youth and cheering on his beloved Yankees.
Gregory came from a family of excellent cooks and picked up some exceptional skills of his own. He would volunteer with the VFW to cook for many of their fundraisers. Gregory was a man who was devoted to the community. He expressed his faith as a member of St. Thomas the Apostle R.C.C. in Sandyston where he was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and sang in the choir. Gregory was also fascinated by history and particularly enjoyed studying the Civil War and World War II.
Gregory is survived by his sister, Janine DeVita Noyes; his nephew, Logan Noyes and his family; his nieces, Noel and Lily-Mae; his cousin, Nick DeVita (Donna); as well as his cousins; extended family and friends including the Appler’s, the Either’s and the Dooley’s.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at St. Thomas the Apostle R.C.C., 210 US-206, Sandyston, NJ 07826. Interment will follow in Hainesville Cemetery, Cemetery Rd, Sandyston, NJ.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Gregory’s memory to the St. Thomas the Apostle R.C.C., 210 US-206, Sandyston, NJ 07826, the Barn Hill Resident Council, 249 High St, Newton, NJ 07860 or to the Hainesville Cemetery, c/o 24 Jager Rd, Sandyston, NJ 07826.
