Bill was born in Englewood and raised in Teaneck, lived in Leonia for several years, and was a Sussex County resident for the past 41 years. Bill was a natural athlete and excelled in football and wrestling. He attended Montclair State University and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Industrial Arts. After graduating college, Bill proudly served in the New Jersey Army National Guard for eight years in both the enlisted and commissioned officer ranks. He became an industrial arts teacher with the Hackensack Board of Education for 30 years and retired in 2003.
A true craftsman, Bill’s talent and passion for woodworking, construction, and autobody was evident throughout his life. Bill realized a lifelong dream when he designed and built the family home in Frankford Township. He found joy in the simple things in life, often along with a good project and a fine glass of beer. A unique sort of social butterfly, Bill would strike up conversations with just about anyone who would lend an ear, and easily make friends with kindness and his easy-going personality.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Howard William Ackerman, Sr. and Winifred (Kingswood) Ackerman; and his sister, Gayle Grassi. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Susan Jean Ackerman; his son Christopher Ackerman (Jennifer); his daughter, Heather Morgan (Edward IV); his granddaughter, Audrey Ackerman; and his sister, Elaine Jaggard.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
