Born in Franklin to the late Joseph and Mary (Kelso) Jacobs, Joan was a lifelong resident of Sussex County. She spent her early years doting on her two children supporting their activities of hunting, fishing, swimming, horseback riding and tolerating an eclectic variety of pets. As an expert seamstress and crafter, her family benefited from "designer clothes" and her home featured beautiful decor that only she could create.
Later in life, Joan enjoyed employment at Limecrest as a secretary, she also became the secretary for the Lake Owassa Community Association for a number of years. Joan then, until her retirement, took care of the payroll and books for her late husband, "Jeeter," who owned and operated Casterlin Roofing & Siding. With a builder as a husband, Joan and Jeeter together enjoyed refurbishing houses, restoring antiques, and creating one-of-a-kind handmade pieces. In their spare time, they would be swimming, boating, barbequing, traveling and lounging on beaches.
Joan was predeceased by her loving husband, Mahlon "Jeeter" Casterlin; and her devoted son, Donald "Pete" Elston, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Janice Utter and her husband, Stanley, of Wantage; her daughter-in-law, Janet Elston of Lexington, SC; her grandchildren, Erin Meehan and her partner, Curtis Crowell, Rita Elston, Ayla (Utter) Quaglio and her husband, Patrick, and Meredith (Utter) Shortway and her husband, Adam; her great-grandchildren, Dylan, Xavier, Raven, Wyatt, Aubrey, and Sam; and her treasured dog, Foxy.
A private service for family members will be held at a later date. If you wish to honor Joan's memory, the family would be grateful if you made a donation to your favorite charity in her name.
