Today we announce the departure of our uncle, Robert “Lamar” Culver, of Branchville, New Jersey. Lamar passed away peacefully from natural causes when he entered “The Mansion in the Sky,” while under the care of Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice in Fredon, New Jersey on January 12, 2025. He was 95 years old.
A native of Branchville, New Jersey, Lamar was born on January 11, 1930 at home and lived his entire life in town. As a dedicated carpenter, he was known for his expertise and perfection in his ability to build and repair items. Lamar worked many years for Carlton Sprague Carpentry. He also worked at his father’s gas station in Branchville which is now the 7-Eleven on Route 206 and on his sister, Mildred McDanolds, farm which is now home to the State Fair of New Jersey.
Lamar was a private and solitary person. He lived what is considered a simple life. He enjoyed hunting with his labrador retriever, Spooky, fishing, berry picking, snowmobiling in Canada and grew state of the art blueberry bushes at his home in Branchville. Lamar was independent up until his most recent hospitalization, still driving his electric car and food shopping at the age of 94.
Accustomed to his routines, Lamar could frequently be seen at Victoria Diner or Yetter’s for his breakfast or afternoon coffee. It was at Victoria Diner that he formed many lasting bonds of friendship and an active social life.
One of Lamar’s favorite expressions was, “Well that’s just the way it is.” When asking him what the secret to his longevity is, he would joyfully respond, “Use lots of salt.”
Although we mourn the loss of Lamar and he may be gone, he will not be forgotten. Congratulations Lamar on a life well lived! We will always carry your memory in our hearts.
Lamar was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Cora (Lott) Culver. He is survived by his nieces, Connie Cannavale, Cathy Gardner (Tom), and Mary Backus (John); his nephew, Billy McDanolds (Barbara); as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews
Services are private under the direction of Wood Funeral Home. Condolences can be offered to the family below.
