Robert was born in Passaic, NJ on June 11, 1946. As a small boy, he lived with his family in Clifton, before his family settled in the Lake Owassa section of Frankford, NJ.
His lifelong love for the water began as a teenager at the lake, where he made unforgettable memories water-skiing, performing tricks, and racing speedboats with his brother.
In time, he built a life defined by dedication and perseverance, opening Bob's Custom Docks in Branchville, NJ, a business he owned and operated for more than 42 years. Robert’s work was not simply an occupation, but a lasting expression of purpose and pride and love of the outdoors.
For the last 20 years, Robert shared his life with Joanne Pickell, his life partner, his girlfriend, and his very best friend. Their time together was a testament to companionship; an everyday closeness built on trust, shared life, and the comfort of being truly known.
In his free time, Robert enjoyed hunting, and he loved the time he spent at his off grid cabin in New York State. He also devoted himself to his grandchildren, making sure they felt his love and affection in ways they will carry with them always. Yet, above all, as an enduring testament to his drive and commitment, Robert’s greatest passion and focus remained his work.
Robert was also a former member of the Frankford Fire Department, reflecting a quiet willingness to step forward and serve his community when needed.
Robert is survived by his life partner, Joanne Pickell; his daughter and son in law, Nikki and Joey O'Dell; his son and daughter in law, Paul and Meghan Putera; his stepchildren, Gary Pickell and Jessica Sickel; his brother and sister in law, Larry and Gloria Putera; and his grandchildren, Avery and Axel Putera, and Carlie Fuchs. Robert was predeceased by his beloved parents, Paul and Evelyn Putera.
A passionate animal lover, a favorite pastime was making sure the dogs of friends and family were happily plump and showered with treats.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
