Fred Goad was known as a visionary, leader, and mentor. He had a passion for entrepreneurship and was always generous with his time and sharing his wisdom. He was admired for his kindness and willingness to help. He inspired many.
Blessed by his loving family and friendships too numerous to count, Fred was loved by all that knew him. While the twinkle in his eye and warm smile may be gone, he will be in our hearts forever. His legacy will live on, and Fred Goad stories will be told and re-told for years to come.
Fred graduated from Sewanee Military Academy in 1958. As a lieutenant of his platoon, Fred displayed his excellent leadership abilities as he led his platoon to numerous first place awards in drill competitions as well as being named “Best Drilled Platoon.” He was the only non-Battalion Commander to receive the “Outstanding Leadership Medal” in school history.
After Sewanee, Fred went to the University of Virginia where he received his Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree. Thomas Jefferson founded UVA and is on the $2.00 bill. On each of his grandchildren’s birthdays, Fred kept his Virginia school spirit alive by giving them $2.00 bills equal to their age.
He founded, operated, or invested in numerous successful healthcare companies during his career, including ENVOY, Quintiles, WebMD and HealthSpring.
Most recently, Fred was a General Partner and board member of Relevance Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on wellness companies.
Fred and his longtime business partner formed Voyent Partners, a private investment company nearly 25 years ago. As an angel investor, he invested in more than 100 healthcare-related startups. Young executives often sought his guidance and input on marketing strategies and operational issues.
As Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer of ENVOY Corporation, Fred and his business partner successfully grew the company, and it became the leading provider of electronic claims processing. They sold ENVOY to Quintiles in 1999 and he was named Senior Advisor to the Office of the President as well as joined the board of directors.
A year later, Fred helped structure the sale of the ENVOY unit within Quintiles to WebMD. Fred served as Co-CEO of the transaction services division of WebMD.
Fred held senior positions with Uccel Corporation, Financial Institution Services (now CompuCard), Docutel (now Olivetti) and IBM Corporation.
He was a founding investor in HealthSpring which was acquired by Cigna. He served on the board of directors for numerous public and private companies, including Luminex, Performance Food Group, Specialist on Call, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, and the Nashville Healthcare Council.
