John Hugh Matlock, age 78, departed this life on April 13, 2021. He was born on November 23, 1942 in Wynne, Arkansas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Emma Lawson Smith. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings.
John’s career with Rollins Truck Leasing escalated from washing leased trucks to the Vice President of Truck Leasing for the entire Northeast Region. His leadership and keen arbitration skills were exemplary and resulted in the avoidance of a union strike over dinner with a pen and a napkin. After retiring from Penske (which bought out Rollins), John started the Dyslexia Centers of Tennessee in Brentwood.
John was an avid Arkansas Razorback fan. He was a member of Brentwood Baptist Church for over 30 years, where he served as deacon. John’s humble beginnings inspired him to a life of helping others. He helped many Sheriff’s offices with troubled and disadvantaged children, and was a staunch supporter of the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home, a mission near and dear to his heart.
He served as President of the PTO at Crockett Elementary, and volunteered with youth sports until just a short time ago. He served with Gideon’s International, and served on mission trips to Moldova and Israel. He had a larger than life personality and his word was his bond. John had a knack for getting most anything done or knowing who to enlist to help others and support so many causes. John was a mentor to many of his close friends, former co-workers and employees. He was the type of leader who believed in developing his associates to become better leaders. He was the type of friend who inspired others to be the best they could be as well.
He is survived by his sons, David (Pam) Matlock of Cornersville, TN and Thomas (Deborah) Matlock of Daytona Beach, FL; daughter, Carolyn Matlock of Seattle, WA; grandson, Carter Matlock of Cornersville, TN; and a host of beloved friends who are his extended family.
