Departed this small planet May 6, 2018, destination unknown. Born on July 7, 1931, he was the son of the late John Carlyle and Mary Frances Jefferson Schmitt of Franklin. He was the Grandson of the late Judge Henry Dickerson and Frances Woltring Schmitt of Louisville, Kentucky.
He is survived by his Wife of 60 years, Joan Severeid Schmitt of San Antonio, Texas; son John Carlyle Schmitt, III (Jay), daughter-in-law, Wendy Warner Schmitt, granddaughter Emily Warner Schmitt, and grandson John Carlyle Schmitt, IV (Jack) of Atlanta; daughter Kelley Schmitt Rice and husband Theodore Allen Rice (Ted) of Nashville; sister Mary Francis Ligon of Franklin; and many nieces, nephews, great nephews and great nieces of Franklin.
He was educated at Battle Ground Academy, Vanderbilt University, and The University of Tennessee Dental College in Memphis. His oral surgery residences were served at the University of Texas Post-Graduate Hospital in San Antonio, the University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia General Hospital in Philadelphia, and Emory University and Grady Hospitals in Atlanta. He practiced in Nashville for more than 40 years with Dr. Joe Ladd and Dr. Lindsey Cooper Sr. He served as a consultant in oral surgery at Meharry Medical College for over 40 years with Dr. Singleton, Dr. Ray Bennett, and Dr. Charles Williams. In addition, he served on the night call anesthesia staff at the old Nashville General Hospital for five years. He served on the visiting staffs of St. Thomas, Parkview (now Centennial), and Vanderbilt University hospitals for many years.
He served for 15 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, active duty during the Korean War at Paris Island, South Carolina and with the U.S. Navy’s 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea aboard the USS Rockbridge APA 228, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He became a member of the American Board of Oral Surgery in 1962.
He was a lifelong fisherman, trap shooter and amateur radio operator holding the extra class FCC license KQ4C for many years.
Visitation at Calvary United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 12th. A short memorial service will follow in the CUMC Columbarium and will be conducted by Carol Cavin Dillon. A reception and celebration of life will follow at 1:30 P.M. at the Schmitt home.
