Born September 27, 1959, at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, Lynda’s early life reflected both discipline and promise. She earned a Chemistry degree from Agnes Scott College, then went on to obtain a Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Tennessee School of Engineering.
Lynda was the founder and owner of Wimberly Sales Company, a 30 years long distinguished business specializing in HVAC instrumentation and specialty building-control products designed to enhance energy efficiency and performance. Under her leadership, the company earned a reputation for innovation, integrity, and technical excellence in the industry.
A beloved and formidable presence in the golf world, Lynda dominated local and national competition alike. She won the Richland Country Club Championship an extraordinary 19 times, a testament to her skill, focus, and competitive spirit.
Her talent was equally evident on the national stage. In 2015, she made a dramatic, last-minute entry into the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship and, despite minimal preparation time, advanced into match play and won her Round of 64 match 5-and-4. She also captured multiple titles in the Tennessee Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, including a wire-to-wire win in 2016, and was named the Tennessee Golf Association’s Senior Amateur Golfer of the Year in 2018.
Lynda was so much more than her résumé. She was well-read, well-traveled, and always the smartest person in the room—a woman of sharp intellect and insatiable curiosity. It is hard to find a book she had not read and Lynda could talk about any subject that came up in conversation. She loved to explore the world and visited many countries across five continents, bringing home not just memories, but a global perspective and deep appreciation for different cultures. Her knowledge was vast, her insights always thoughtful, and her humor subtle and quick. Lynda was blessed with life-long friends from high school, college and the golf sports community and in her last years of life, they showed up in great numbers and loved her. Not many people have the circle of friends like she did and they brought her great joy. Conversations with her were a privilege, and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life much like her father could was a rare and beautiful gift.
She is preceded in death by her father, Joseph Johnston Wimberly,III and survived by her loving mother, Joyce Wimberly of Brentwood, TN; her brother, John Wimberly (Tori) of Nashville, TN; and her sisters, Karyn Wimberly Altshuler (Martin) of Knoxville, TN, and Mary Donna Wimberly Helms (Craig) of Daphne, AL.
She also leaves behind her adored nieces and nephews, each of whom she cherished deeply: Emily Altshuler Van Eerd (Michael), Davis Altshuler (Kelsey), Kate Altshuler, Charlie Helms, Wimberly Helms, Elle Wimberly, Sloane Wimberly, and Lilly Wimberly.
Lynda will be remembered for her extraordinary accomplishments, her fierce intellect, her adventurous spirit, and her deep love for her family. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched with her wisdom, strength, generosity, and grace.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 8, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM with the funeral service to follow at noon at Brentwood United Methodist Church. The family invites all who knew and loved Lynda to attend a Celebration of Life at Richland Country Club immediately following the service.
A private interment will be held Saturday at Harpeth Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts honoring Lynda may be made to the Tennessee Golf Foundation at 400 Franklin Road, Franklin, TN 37069 or by going online at https://tngolffoundation.org/
