

Sylvia attended Hillsboro and Overton High Schools and continued her education at the University of Tennessee at Martin, where she was an active member of the Alpha Delta Phi Sorority. She cherished her time at UT Martin, forming lifelong friendships and creating lasting memories.
Sylvia’s love for life extended beyond her education. She had a passion for spending time on the lake, boating, and enjoying the outdoors with her family. Whether it was a sunny day on the water or cheering for the Tennessee Vols, Sylvia always found joy in the little things. She also spent countless hours connecting with family and friends through Facebook and loved indulging in shopping trips.
A dedicated member of Brentwood Baptist Church for over 10 years, Sylvia’s faith was an integral part of her life. Her kindness, strength, and unwavering support touched many within her church community.
In her professional life, Sylvia made history as the first woman to serve as a marketing representative for Kraft Foods, paving the way for others in the industry with her dedication and hard work. She was a trailblazer who led with grace and determination.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, L.T. and Klara Alexander, and her cherished daughter, Kristen Lee Smithson.
She leaves behind her loving husband of 50 years, James E. Smithson, and their three children: Kandacy Smithson-Groves, and Christopher Pryor Smithson. Sylvia was also a proud grandmother to Brody James Smithson (mother Karla), Jessica Groves, and Colin Groves. She is survived by her siblings, Warneta (Jim) Conner and Robert (Merrie) Alexander, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever hold her memory in their hearts.
Sylvia’s legacy of love, faith, and perseverance will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Brentwood Baptist Church 7777 Concord Rd, Brentwood, TN 37027; Wednesday, November 12, 2025 9:30am-11:00am with service to follow.
