Thomas “Tom” Charles Cassilly, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025 at the age of 88. Born on November 21, 1936, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Tom was the son of the late Thomas and Emma Cassilly.
A graduate of Bellevue High School, Tom proudly served his country in the United States Army, having been inducted in 1959 and honorably discharged in 1965. He went on to pursue his education, earning degrees from Carnegie Mellon Institute of Technology and Juniata College.
On June 23, 1962, he married the love of his life, Doris. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised four children. Tom devoted over 37 years of his professional life to UCAR Carbon Company, where he served in various leadership roles including Plant Manager, General Manager, and General Manager of Specialties and Graphite—a role he said was his favorite. His work took him across the globe, from New York to Brazil, and he embraced each opportunity with dedication and integrity. After retirement, he and Doris moved to Tennessee to be closer to children and grandchildren.
Beyond his professional achievements, Tom was a devoted family man and cherished time spent with loved ones. He and Doris shared a passion for travel, exploring new places as often as they could. Tom was a true car enthusiast, both old and new. He also stayed current on the latest issues of Consumer Reports. He was always ready and able to share that knowledge to anyone in the market for a new appliance or vehicle.
He was known for his thoughtful, curious mind.
His grandchildren fondly remember his ever-ready sweet tooth, never missing an opportunity for a bowl of ice cream. The freezer was never without your favorite if he knew a visit was upcoming. The grandchildren can also attest that he never passed a bowl of mints without discreetly gathering a handful.
Above all, Tom was known for his honesty, gentleness, kindness, and work ethic—qualities that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Tom is proceeded in death by his parents, Thomas and Emma Cassilly. He is survived by his devoted wife Doris; his sister, Dr. Joan Patricia Cassilly; his children David (Barb) Cassilly, Bill (Ruth) Cassilly, John (Becky) Cassilly, and Pam (Bryan) Keith; as well as his many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
