

The daughter of Ruth Laney Powell, Mrs. Draper was born in Troy, Alabama and was a graduate of Columbia High School in Lake City, Florida, Troy State College (now Troy University) and the University of South Florida in Tampa. Upon graduating from Troy in 1967, Betty embarked on an impactful teaching career spanning four decades at Brooksville Primary School and Brooksville Elementary School in Hernando County. She would continue serving Hernando County as an educational administrator, helping lay the foundation of one of the strongest schools in Florida with the development of Challenger K8 School of Science and Mathematics. After retirement, Betty continued her dedicated efforts in education with volunteer work at both Challenger K8 and Moton Elementary School in Brooksville.
She was an officer of the Hernando County Gator Club and was on the Teacher of the Year Committee for Hernando County.
In 1971, Betty married Robert W. Draper of Brooksville. The marriage lasted for over 53 years before his death on February 14, 2025. She is survived by her loving family: her daughter, Leslie Draper Stalcup, son-in-law Richard Stalcup, three grandchildren, Ross, Laney and Cooper Stalcup, and sister, Marilyn Schaeffer. All are residents of Hernando County, Florida.
A Memorial Gathering for Elizabeth will be held Sunday, September 14, 2025 from 2:30-3:30pm at Merritt Funeral Home (2 South Lemon Avenue, Brooksville, FL 34601), where a Memorial Service begins at 3:30pm.
