Elizabeth Lamar Koontz

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Elizabeth Lamar Copeland Koontz, who departed this life peacefully on July 13, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on August 3, 1934, in Norfolk, Virginia, Elizabeth was the cherished daughter of Sarah Elizabeth Gurganus and Steven Copeland.

Elizabeth's life was a testament to love, dedication, and service. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, whose legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, James Henry Koontz, whom she married on September 17, 1955, in Pasadena, California, after a joyous courtship that began in high school.

Elizabeth is survived by her loving children, Steve Koontz (Diana), Karin "Betsy" Lute (Steve), and Amy Koontz. She was a proud grandmother to Christopher Lute-Wise (Mary) and Shelby Lute, whom she adored and cherished deeply.

Education and career were important pillars in Elizabeth's life. She graduated from Sherman E. Burroughs High School in 1952 and went on to receive an Associate’s and Nursing Degree from Pasadena City College. She practiced nursing at Huntington Hospital, where her caring nature touched countless lives. Later in her career, she worked part-time with the LaPorte County Drug Free Youth Coalition and served as the Director of the Red Cross for LaPorte County for five years, where her leadership and compassion shone brightly.

Elizabeth was a vibrant member of her community, dedicating her time to a multitude of volunteer organizations, including Job's Daughters, Girl Scouts, Methodist Youth Fellowship, PTA, Welcome Wagon, Meals on Wheels, Save/Support Our Youth, and the Red Hat Society. Her commitment to service was matched only by her love for her family and friends.

Her life was filled with simple joys and deep passions. Elizabeth cherished family-focused events, especially those centered around her faith and the outdoors, such as church gatherings and camping trips. She was an avid bridge player, enjoying countless games with her beloved Jim and their friends. A voracious reader, she found solace and adventure within the pages of her favorite novels.

Elizabeth will be remembered for her kind and loving spirit, her persistent and determined nature, and her unwavering faith in Jesus. Her presence in the lives of those around her was a source of strength and warmth, and her memory will forever be a blessing.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to all friends and neighbors who have shown love and kindness. Special gratitude is expressed to those in the caregiving and medical fields who went above and beyond, displaying gentleness and compassion.

Elizabeth's life was a tapestry of love, service, and faith, woven together with grace and dignity. She will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
