Ernestine W. Burdin

A longtime resident of Brooksville, Florida, Ernestine will be remembered with deep respect and lasting affection by all who knew her.

Ernestine was born on August 15, 1937, in Tampa, Florida, to parents Clarence & Edith Whitehurst. She retired from Hernando County Schools after many years of service as a bookkeeper for the school district, bringing diligence and care to work that depended on precision and trust. Ernestine became the first bonded female deputy in Hernando County—an achievement that reflected both courage and quiet determination.

Ernestine’s hands were rarely still, and her talents were often expressed in the practical beauty she created. She enjoyed hand crafts such as sewing, quilting, crocheting, and knitting, finding satisfaction in patient work done well. She also loved the outdoors—fishing, camping, and gardening—embracing simple pleasures with an adventurous spirit. Travel, too, held a special place in her life, a natural extension of her curiosity and appreciation for the world beyond the familiar.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Homer "Corky" E. Burdin; her daughter, Joyce Lankford; her parents, Clarence & Edith Whitehurst; brother, Clarence Achrol Whitehurst; and grandson, Michael White.

Ernestine is survived by her son, Hosea "Buddy" T. White Jr.; sister, Edith Darlene Furrow; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A Visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00-3:00pm on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at Merritt Funeral Home Brooksville (2 South Lemon Avenue, Brooksville, FL 34601), where a Celebration of Life will begin at 3:00pm. A Graveside Service will follow at Johnson Cemetery (County Road 420, Brooksville, FL 34602).
