
MEEKS, Gene, age 66 of Spring Hill passed away Monday, June 2, 2014 at HPH Hospice Care Center from complications from a stroke. He was born in Pikesville, KY, the son of Everett Meeks & Geneva Gibson Meeks Bailey and raised in Newell, WV where he attended Oak Glen High School. After graduation, he joined the Marines. He served three years with distinction in the Vietnam War as part of the 3rd Engineer Battalion and earned several medals, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Presidential Unit Citation. After Vietnam, Gene was stationed in Bermuda for three years where he served as Honor Guard for Prince Charles. It was also where he met his wife: Maryann. After marriage, Gene moved to the Meyersville section of Long Hill Township, NJ and over his career, worked for AT&T, Hersig Realty and Lounsberry Meadows. He was also active with the Millington Volunteer Fire Dept. where he served as Chief for 3 years and was also active with St Vincent de Paul School. He is survived by his wife: Maryann Mahon Meeks; son: Gene Michael Meeks of Lake Park, GA; daughters & son-in-law: Jamie Meeks & Daniel Jones of Somerville, NJ and Sarah Lynn Meeks of Nashville, TN; brothers: Stanley, William, Everett & Garfield Meeks; sisters: Margie Holt, Patrina McMichael, Jewell Hofacre & Fetima McGill and grandchildren: Thomas, Lucas & Daisy Jones. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Newell, WV. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Millington Fire Dept., Millington, NJ or to the DAV.
