

Allen James Berry, Sr., 90, of St. Simons Island, went to heaven Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Hospice of The Golden Isles. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Christian Renewal Church on St. Simons Island with Rev. Mike Murray, Rev. William Ligon, and Dr. Calder Kinney officiating. Interment will follow in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday evening, November 24, 2014 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. www.edomillerandsons.com Born November 4, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Charles W. and Nina L. Berry, he grew up on Staten Island where his father was an outstanding pediatric physician, a Major General who commanded the New York National Guard, and served as Comptroller of New York City. In retirement, the family moved to Charlottesville, VA. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sons, Howard Lee Berry and Wayne Crews Berry, and a sister, Martha Anne Gerosa and her husband Alfred. Allen’s education was at Staunton Military Academy, Lane High School and University of Virginia where he received a Bachelor of Arts and Masters Degrees. His schooling was interrupted by army service in World War 2 and the European theater of operation. Mr. Berry came to Glynn County in 1959 as manager of General Adjustment Bureau and later became partner in a general insurance firm selling all kinds of policies for many years. Then, in semi-retirement, he did adjusting work again until full retirement. He also enjoyed teaching and helped establish the local college through evening classes, first at Glynn Academy and later at the college itself. He was a member of The Rotary Club on St. Simons Island, and had served as president, secretary, and historian and worked in many projects. Mr. Berry was a charter member of Christian Renewal Church in Brunswick and on St. Simons Island and served as an elder in the church. He also hosted a home group meeting for 36 years, as well as traveling extensively to more than 20 countries to share the Gospel. In addition, he taught a television and radio program called Bread of Life for twelve years. It presented the International Sunday School Lesson. He was an avid tennis player and also hosted the Great Books Club. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Jean C. Berry of St. Simons Island, four children, A.J. Berry, Jr. of St. Simons Island, Andy Berry and wife Kim of San Diego, CA, Kathy Jean B. Patel and husband Dr. Neil Patel of New Zealand, and Brent Berry and wife Kimberly Ann of Waverly, ten grandchildren, Jessica Delahunt and husband Robert, Brent Berry, Jr., Sadie Berry, Hailey Berry, Luke Ari Patel, Joy Ammi Patel, Daniel Elijah Patel, Grace Anna Patel, Faith Esther Patel, and John-Michael Elisha Patel, a brother, William Myers Berry of Charlottesville, VA, and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
