A celebration of her life will take place on Monday, June 20th at the St. Simons Island Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Preceding the service, inurnment will be at the Christ Church Cemetery Columbarium, St. Simons Island, Georgia. She was a loving wife to Wistar for 66 years, a devoted and compassionate mother to her three children, John, Katherine and Susan and a loyal friend to countless people. She had a keen passion for life and a deep religious faith.
Mrs. Goodhue was born in Atlanta, Georgia September 11, 1921. She was two when her father (John Joseph Eagan) passed away, leaving her mother (Susan Young Eagan) to raise she and her brother, Bill, sharing the strong Christian principles that would be evident throughout her life. While a resident of Atlanta she was an active member of the Atlanta Junior League, the Nine O’Clocks and the Friday Ladies. She attended Ashley Hall, Bryn Mawr College and graduated from Agnes Scott College, as was tradition, for her family had strong ties there. She was also instrumental in the founding of the Atlanta Speech School, having dealt with profound deafness as a child. She was a member of the Red Cross Motor Core during the war and also excelled as an equestrian, as did her brother. She and her family were an important part of Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, having created a baby clinic there for those in need.
After her husband’s dedicated service to the war efforts, as an aviator in the Naval Air Core, in World War II and the Korean War, she and her husband moved to South Hadley, Massachusetts to raise their family. She was an avid volunteer and member of the Congregational Church, the Holyoke Jr. League, the Holyoke Hospital, the YMCA, the Orchards Gold Club, the Holyoke Canoe and Athletic Club and was involved with both of her alma maters, Bryn Mawr and Agnes Scott College. Berry College also held a special place in her heart due to a close family relationship with Martha Berry. She was an accomplished skier, golf and tennis player with a competitive spirit that allowed her family to accept her winning graciously. She also taught lip reading at the Northampton School for the Deaf, always sympathetic to others that shared her hearing challenges. She had been encouraged to read lips by her mother so as not to be separated from others in a hearing world. During the last decade of her life she took advantage of new implant technology that restored her hearing tremendously. She was always eager to take whatever measures were necessary to overcome any adversity, focusing on the blessings in life. She and Wistar traveled extensively throughout their many years of marriage enjoying friends and family throughout many continents.
After becoming a permanent resident of Sea Island, Georgia, 32 years ago, her interests and memberships included the Sea Island and Ocean Forest Golf Clubs, Sea Island Garden Club and was a passionate member of the St. Simons Presbyterian Church. For 41 years she was honored to serve as a Board Member of American Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO), founded by her father, in Birmingham, Alabama. ACIPCO management technique reflects the Golden Rule, principles her father and mother felt should be an integral part of one’s personal values and business ethics. In keeping with the family pioneering corporate spirit, the company was entrusted to the employees upon the death of her father.
Many wonderful family memories were created with summers spent at The Bald Peak Club in New Hampshire and in Greensboro, Vermont. Activities in Greensboro included the Mountain View Country Club, the “Lunch Ladies” group as well as being a devoted summer member of the Greensboro United Church of Christ. Her loyal dachshund, Mini, enjoyed her mountain summers there also.
