Bernie was a native of Virginia and a proud veteran, having served in the Army National Guard of Virginia from 1956 until 1962, when he was honorably discharged. During his military service, he began his career with West Virginia Paper Company. Following his military service, Bernie relocated the family to Brunswick, Georgia, where he continued his career with Scott Mead Paper Company, now known as Georgia-Pacific. Bernie dedicated many years to the paper industry, serving as a superintendent over the No. 3 paper machine, and retired in 1996 after a long and respected career. Following his retirement, he was sought after as a consultant for the mill, traveling extensively and repeatedly throughout the world, most notably to Siberia and Finland, where his knowledge and experience were highly valued.
A man of faith, Bernie was a devoted member of Golden Isles Baptist Church. He found great joy in the outdoors, especially fishing and golfing. Fishing was a cherished family tradition — while working the midnight shift, Bernie would often call home to tell his children to get the boat ready, and they would spend the entire day fishing together. Those days on the water created memories that his family will treasure forever. He was also an avid golfer and a longtime member of Heritage Golf Club, where he both worked and played.
Bernie was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia Cummings Hurt; a daughter, Brenda Hurt Hayes; his parents, Burtrum Harris Hurt, Sr. and Addie Saul Hurt; and two brothers, Burtrum Harris Hurt, Jr. and William Larry Hurt.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Bryant Hurt of Brunswick; his children, Gayle Wilson (Robb) of Columbus, Indiana, Laura Caldwell, Bernie Hurt, Jr. (Karen), Cathy Jo King (Brian), Brent Hurt, Nikki Parker (Wes), all of Brunswick, Shelley Griffis (Brad), and Kelley Drake (Alan); as well as 31 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of great pride and joy in his life.
