

Carl Edward Hawkins, age 65, of Darien, died Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Memorial Health in Savannah. Carl was a native of West Virginia, but had lived in McIntosh County since 1969. He worked at Hercules for 35 years prior to retiring in 2006, and in his spare time enjoyed fishing. Carl was a member of Cox Hunting Club and attended Darien Church of God.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ruthlyn Hawkins of Darien; three daughters, Carla Poppell (Robert, Jr.) of Darien, Kim Browning (Robbie) of Odum and Laura Chambers (Adam) of Townsend; five grandchildren, Craig Chambers, Gage Browning, Crista Chambers, Alex Browning and Blake Poppell; two brothers, Bill Hawkins (Sue) and Donnie Hawkins (Debbie), both of West Virginia; a sister, Sue Weese of St. Mary’s, GA, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Thursday at 2:00 pm at the Darien Church of God with Reverend Tommy Whaley and Pastor Keith Lairscy officiating. Burial will follow at the McIntosh Family Cemetery in South Newport. Active pallbearers will be Bruce Collins, Troy Faircloth, Emery Poppell, Ricky Bennett, Roger Blakesmith, Kenny Taylor and Bobby Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Kirkland, Ed Deal, Johnny Cook, Billy Beverly and Steve Poppell.
