Carole Coleman Bruley
November 24, 1933 – November 11, 2012
Carole Coleman Bruley, 78, of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, died Sunday, November 11, after a courageous battle against ampullary cancer. A member of Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica, a memorial service will be held in her honor at 1:00 p.m. on November 24 at Wesley with Reverend Dr. John E. Stephens and Reverend Mark Kase officiating. A private graveside committal service will take place at Christ Church, Frederica.
Born in Lyons, Georgia on November 24, 1933 to D.Q. Coleman and Lourainie Currie Coleman, Mrs. Bruley graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia in 1953 and attended both the University of Georgia and Vanderbilt University in pursuit of advanced coursework. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Vidalia Chapter, Vidalia Georgia.
Devoted to a lifetime of teaching, Mrs. Bruley met her husband, now retired Navy Cmdr. Kenneth Casper Bruley, while he was stationed at GLYNCO N.A.S., and she was teaching high school English at Glynn Academy. Captured by the allure of the island, the couple returned to Saint Simons to rear their family after living in locales as distant as Newport, Rhode Island; San Diego, California; and Key West, Florida. Mrs. Bruley resumed teaching English at Glynn Academy and retired from teaching in 1989 to, instead, focus on caring for family and friends. The lives that her wit, care, and concern reached and impacted are countless; the dignity and grace with which she lived her life and fought her battle are an inspiration to those who remain.
Survivors include her husband of fifty years, Kenneth Casper Bruley; three children: Melinda Bruley White, an English teacher at Frederica Academy on Saint Simons (Luke), Dr. Melissa Bruley Duncan, a radiologist with Eastern Radiologists in Greenville, NC (Don), and Kenneth Coleman Bruley, a patent attorney with Nelson, Mullins, Riley, and Scarborough in Atlanta, GA (Alison); nine grandchildren: Lucas and Coleman White, Thomas, Cate, Auldon, and James Duncan, and Coleman, Knox, and Mae Bruley; and, one cousin, Joyce Middleton West of Waverly, Georgia.
Arrangements are with Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint Simons Land Trust (www.sslt.org), Project ALS (www.projectals.org), or Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Research (www.lustgarten.org ).
