

Charles Franklin Brown, Jr., 78, of St. Simons Island passed away Thursday, January 20, 2011, at the Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick, Georgia. Charlie was born June 20, 1932, on Galveston Island in Texas, and grew up in Texas City, Texas. He loved his childhood summers spent with his grandparents in Kenney, Texas. He graduated from TCU in Ft. Worth, Texas, where he played basketball, his lifelong favorite sport. Following graduation with a degree in Geology, he enjoyed a long and successful career in the oil and gas exploration industry. He was a member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church and a member of the Britt Sunday School Class.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Elma Annie and Charles Franklin Brown; his first wife, Janet; his favorite grandparents Annie and Paul Luhn and his dear Aunt Emma.
He is survived by his wife, Anne, who was the love of his life. He is also survived by his son, Mark Brown, of Angleton, Texas; his daughter, Susan Gray (and husband Jeff) of Houston, Texas; one sister, Karen Hemingway (and husband Mike) of Coldspring, Texas; one brother, Paul Brown (and wife Phyllis) of Lake Charles, Louisiana; four brothers-in-law, Gary Wickre (and wife Becky) of Belvidere, Illinois; Daryl Wickre (and wife Rosemary) of Dubuque, Iowa; Jeff Wickre (and wife Julie) of Dubuque, Iowa; Charles Harvey of Euless, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Jayne Schonhoff (and husband Mark) of Dubuque, Iowa, and Jackie Wickre of Dubuque, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; four beautiful granddaughters, Chelsea Ratliff(and husband Jay Tom) of Dallas, Texas; Brittany Brown of Austin, Texas; Lauren Anne Gray and Emily Caroline Gray of Houston, Texas; and two special puppies, Annie and Susie.
Charlie and Anne moved to St. Simons Island in September 2006 and it quickly became his favorite place on earth and he cherished every moment of every day that he and Anne had together on this beautiful Island. He greeted every morning by saying “Just another day in paradise!”
Charlie loved fishing, playing golf, traveling, reading and he was a gifted short story writer. He enjoyed life to the very fullest. His concern and worry for others far exceeded thoughts about himself. Without a doubt he was the epitome of a fine and true gentleman and he will be missed beyond measure by his loving family and his many, many friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. Simons Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 22, at 4:30 PM with Rev. Bob Brearley officiating. A reception will follow at the Brown’s home.
