Charles Everett Lamkin, of St. Simons Island, died on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick. He was born on June 28, 1943, in Hollywood, Calif., and attended public schools in the Greater Los Angeles area.
In 1961, he moved to Atlanta to join his family and to enter the Georgia Institute of Technology. He interrupted his program there and enlisted in the United States Army in 1966. After basic and advanced individual training, he was posted to Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division, serving at Camp Enari in the Central Highlands. After completing his military obligation, he resumed his undergraduate career at Georgia State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and journalism. In 1969, he entered the Emory University School of Law, graduating in 1972. After graduation, he joined the law firm of Lipshutz, Macey, Zussman and Sikes in Atlanta, achieving partnership status in 1975. In 1979, he moved to St. Simons Island, Ga., and opened a practice, sharing space with the late Robert McCartney and the late William Dismer. He married Becky Rowell in 1985 in an outdoor ceremony in Black Banks on St. Simons Island. Coming to the true faith late in life, he was baptized and confirmed at Christ Church, Frederica in 2011. He sang in the Christ Church Choir, played in the handbell choir, and served on the St. Ignatius Altar Guild and Martha's Guild. Charles was predeceased by his parents, Everett and Cherrie Lamkin; his maternal and paternal grandparents; and other relatives. He is survived by his brothers Jett (Leslie) Lamkin of St. Simons Island, Tommy Rowell (Julie) of Moultrie, Ga., and Larry Rowell (Edwina) of Campbellsville, Ky.; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He leaves his cherished “Mules,” basset hounds Winston and Merry, and domestic cat Boomer. He leaves his beloved wife Becky, with gratitude for being able to see her ordained a priest of the Episcopal Church, where she now serves as interim associate rector.
A requiem Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Christ Church, Frederica with The Right Reverend Scott A. Benhase, Tenth Bishop of the Diocese of Georgia, presiding and the Rev. Tom Purdy assisting. There will be a private committal after the service at the columbarium in the churchyard followed by a reception in the parish hall.
