Comer is a friend I don't ever remember not having in my life. We grew up in a small tight-knit community at a time when kids could still play outside alone until dark and our neighborhood was an island. We got to play at the beach, swim at the casino, go bowling or even skating all in one place. We went to school together from elementary all the way till we graduated. He was the funny, cute, surfer boy. He liked to tell "tall tales" about everything, but he made you laugh so much you couldn't even get mad at him. I honestly can't think of anyone who didn't like him. He was just that guy. 
As an adult he became an accomplished chef and I loved seeing him post pictures of his latest creations on Facebook. 

He loved his Mom and could definitely be called a Mama's boy, but he wore that title proudly. He loved his sister and was thrilled when he became an uncle. However, becoming a Dad to Harley brought him another level of happiness that I could see. It was nice to be able to keep up with him through Facebook and see him with Harley as she grew up. I only wish that could have been longer than the 5 years she had with him. I pray that he is at peace in a better place with his Mom now. I hope that Harley knows that Comer was a funny, goofy, compassionate, loving man and all his goodness lives on in her and that if one day she wants to reach out there are more people than she will ever realize that will be willing to share their memories of him with her. My thoughts and prayers are with you Laura and your boys.

Comer was a good friend of mine for most of my life. Baseball,Football, Boy Scouts, Etc...I always enjoyed chasing him.  I will miss you my friend

I knew Comer before I can remember thanks to our mothers' friendship.  He was our class clown and from early days kept us all entertained and our teachers frustrated and no doubt quietly amused.  He made "tall tales" an art form. He was also an eternal flirt and every girl's crush at one time or another and a first kiss for MANY of them.  He is an integral part of so many memories.  My childhood would be incomplete without him.  

I loved following his culinary success and seeing his love for his daughter via his FB posts.  I am so grateful I ran into him two years ago on a trip home and got to say hello and have a quick hug for the first time in a couple of decades.  I just wish it could happen again on future trips home.  Rest in peace, Comer.  You were a one of a kind.

The summer I turned nine years old my family moved to St. Simons and into Island Square Apartments. The manager at the time was a woman by the name of Betsy Smith. Mrs. Smith, like my own mom, had two children. A son, Comer, the same age as my brother, and a daughter, Laura, the same age as me.Our reluctance to meet soon faded into a life long friendship I cherish everyday. Comer became like another big brother to me, always there to torture Laura and I no matter what we were doing. When I think back on my childhood I always think back to moving to St. Simons, almost as though time did not exist before that, and I think about the Smith's, Betsy, Comer, and Laura and I feel so blessed. While today my heart aches and is sad I can't help but also smile at all the wonderful times I got to spend with these amazing people. Rest in peace Comer and thanks for all the memories.

My heart is heavy for your sadness.  Hold tight to the memories of love and laughter (and aggravation!); take them out often, dust them off, and celebrate them.  My prayers are for comfort and quick healing of your hearts.

So sad to hear about Comer.  I will remember the Comer I knew growing up, cute and funny, he always sat in front of me in every class because my last name was Smith also.  He and his family are in my prayers.

My sincere sympathy to the family of Comer. Words can not explain the hurt that you are experiencing. I didn't know him very long, but it didn't take me long to realize that he was a good man with a great heart. I have been touched by his kindness and have a daily reminder of his time on earth. May God give you strength during this difficult time.

Comer and his family lived across the hall from me growing up. I will always remember his humor, drive, and how much he loved his mom and sister. My heart breaks for both family and friends that are left behind. If you knew him, he always told it like it was, and you were a better person for it.
