David Ronald Driggers Sr.

David R. Driggers, of Townsend, departed this life Sunday, August 23, 2026 at his residence. He was born February 22, 1946, and was a hardworking man with a generous heart, a deep love for his family, and a lifetime of service to the community, he called home.

For more than 50 years, David worked as a commercial crabber, spending countless days on the river he loved. He also spent an incredible 56 years driving a gas truck. To David, his work was about far more than making a living; it was about taking care of people. There were nights when David would get a phone call in the middle of the night from someone needing gas, and without hesitation, he would get up and make sure they got what they needed because he could not stand the thought of anyone spending a cold night without heat. If someone needed help and David could provide it, he did. He was the kind of man who would do anything in the world for someone in need.

His life was also marked by service to his country and his community. David proudly served in the Air National Guard and was one of the first members of the volunteer fire department. He went on to serve as Chief of the Crescent Fire Station for many years, dedicating his time, strength, and leadership to serving the people of McIntosh County, a community he was proud to call home.

In his younger years, David enjoyed playing softball. Throughout his life, he loved being out on the river and spending time with family. He also enjoyed eating at local restaurants, where he could often be found visiting, talking, and sharing a laugh with friends and familiar faces. He never met many strangers, and if you met David, chances are you remember his handshake. He loved to reach out his hand, look you in the eye, and give you a grip strong enough to make you wonder if you were getting your hand back in one piece. That famously strong handshake became part of who he was, and it is something his family and friends will always remember with a smile.

Survivors include his daughter, Tammy Driggers (Scott Sutlive) Crescent, three grandchildren, Marcus Stamey, Tabitha Stamey, and Daphanie Driggers (Jeffrey Becker), three great grandchildren, Branson Underwood, Callyn Driggers and Jeffery Becker.

David also dearly loved his dog, Little Girl, who held a very special place in his heart and was a treasured companion to him.

Above everything else, David loved his family. There was nothing in this world he would not have done for them. He was dependable, hardworking, strong, generous, and always willing to lend a hand to someone who needed it.

His life cannot be measured simply by the number of years he lived, but by the countless people he helped, the family he loved, the community he served, the friendships he made, and the memories he leaves behind.

The river will be a little quieter without him, but his presence will always be felt there, in the waters he worked for more than 50 years, in the community he spent a lifetime serving, and most of all, in the family he loved beyond measure.
