Dawana G. Gibbs of Brunswick, Georgia entered peacefully into Heaven’s Gates on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at Southeast Georgia Health Systems. Her legacy of helping others will be continued for many years by her Nursing Students at the College of Coastal Georgia. As a mentor to many, she always demonstrated a calm, joyful, and comforting nature while caring for others.
Dawana was a lifelong resident of Brunswick, Georgia and a graduate of Glynn Academy. She was the daughter of the late James Clayton Griner and the late Doris Harper Griner. She continued her education and became a Registered Nurse, and later earned her Master’s Degree in Nursing from Georgia Southern University. She then became a mentor and role model for nursing students by becoming a Certified Nursing Educator (CNE). She was a member of the American Nursing Association, the Georgia Nurses Association, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She was an Associate Professor of Nursing at College of Coastal Georgia. Dawana was also the recipient of the Albert Crews Service Award, the Advisor of the Year Award, and the Outstanding Faculty Member in Service Learning Award. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Brunswick.
Dawana was a cheerful and outgoing social butterfly that met no stranger. She loved spending time with her family and traveling. She also was an avid reader and enjoyed the beach. She also volunteered at the Island Players Children’s Theater where she used her crafting skills to help make costumes. She made every child feel special through her work as a costumer and producer. She believed the world was a little better if you added glitter. Her family and friends have lost a dear friend and Heaven has gained an angel.
Left to cherish her memories are her devoted husband of 37 years Richard Gibbs of Brunswick; her daughter, Jessica Gibbs-Zettler (Ellis) also of Brunswick; her two precious grandchildren, Atlas and Lottie Zettler; two sisters, LaVonda Dixon (Don) of Darien; Tonya Mullis (Bill) of Brunswick; mother-in-law, Linda Gibbs of Brunswick; a sister-in-law, Dana Hubbard (Don) also of Brunswick. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to Dawana’s parents she is also preceded in death by her father-in-law, Davis Gibbs.
A celebration of life service to honor Dawana will be held at a later date. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for memorial contributions made to www.CCGA.edu/Dawana .
