On October 11, 2026 about 9:30 PM, Delores Ann Shumans Joyner took her last breath on this earth and her first breath in Heaven, surrounded by family and friends. Known as Ann to most and “Nanny” to family and close friends, she lived a wonderful and fulfilled life in Christ. She was a true Renaissance Woman (a polymath if you will), more on that later.
It began on February 21, 1956 in Albuquerque, New Mexico as the first child of Johnson Edward Shumans and Mattie Dee Simmons Shumans. After completing military service, the family settled in Brunswick, GA. Ann attended Jack and Jill Kindergarten, C B Greer Elementary School, Glynn County Junior High School and Glynn Academy, graduating in 1974 with honors. On June 4, 1979, she earned her Physician Assistant degree from Trevecca Nazarene College (TNC) in Nashville Tennessee. Then got married in Brunswick, GA on June 9, 1979 to Leon F. (Rocky) Joyner, Jr.
In the 1980’s, Ann worked at Kennesaw Family Physicians, attended Marietta Church of the Nazarene and had two wonderful children, Trey and Ashley.
The 1990’s were predominately spent in West Palm Beach, FL where Ann was very active in the Lake Worth Church of the Nazarene and began her life long love of bible study with Bible Study Fellowship.
The family returned to Georgia in 1998 and lived there until retiring home to Brunswick on January 1, 2023.
The above is a thumbnail sketch of a life but in adding the details, what a life. As noted earlier, she was indeed a polymath. She was an accomplished flutist, pianist, singer, worship leader, and choir director. She even wrote a few pieces of music and arranged others for her worship team. (She was the worship leader at Marietta First Nazarene and Grace Community Church of the Nazarene in Brunswick.)
Additionally, she was an avid (though not overly talented) sportsman, including tennis (varsity letter at TNC), softball, pickleball, disc golf, fishing (we must point out mostly fishing not necessarily catching), and beachcombing.
Furthermore, she was great at sewing (she made many of her own clothes in high school and college), cross stitch, crocheting, and quilting.
She was always up to learn something new (including plumbing, if she could Google it, she could do it).
She loved deeply, including her husband of 47 years, her children, her grandchildren, her brother, her nieces, her stepmother, her extended in-law family and a multitude of friends and “fishing Buddies.”
She began a deep study of God’s Word in 1990 when she joined Bible Study Fellowship. One of the last things her declining body allowed her to do was prepare for a children’s bible study that she would never get to give. But that was Ann, always preparing always learning, always living life to the fullest.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years Rocky, children Leon F. (Trey) Joyner, III and Ashley Delores Joyner Duncan, in-law children Elizabeth Miller Joyner (Lizzy) and Jonathan Montiel Duncan, grandchildren Caroline Ann Joyner, Blakely Grace Joyner, Mateo Edward Duncan, Ada Margaret Joyner and Luca Joseph Duncan, brother Eric Shumans, stepmom Christine Boggs, in-law sisters and brothers and nieces, and great nieces and nephews as well as many cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. at Bay Harbour Church of God, 3210 US Highway 82, Brunswick, Georgia. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Bay Harbour Church of God.
She was greatly loved by many and will be missed.
If you would like to donate in her memory, donations may be sent to Grace Community Church of the Nazarene, c/o Leon Joyner, 118 Royal Drive, Brunswick, Ga 31523 or Manna House of Brunswick, c/o Jim Crandall, 138 Cypress Run Drive, Brunswick, GA 31520.
