Born on December 2, 1937, to Tyrus Jerald Manning and Ida Herrin Manning in Patterson, GA, he was a native of Brantley County and grew up in Trudie. Dr. Manning was a 1956 honor graduate of Nahunta High School, class of 1960 at Georgia Southern College and then a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia in 1966 with honors being a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, an honorary society. He did his internship in Boston Massachusetts and a Radiology Residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He was board certified in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.
Dr. Manning began his medical career in the Glynn Brunswick Memorial Hospital in 1970, as a member of the staff there for 42 years, he also served as a member of that Hospital's Authority for both the Brunswick and Camden campuses. His many medical affiliations included memberships in the American Medical Association, the Medical Association of GA, Georgia Radiologic Society, the American Colleges of both Radiology and Nuclear Medicine and the Southeast Angiographic Society. In addition, he served as President of both the Eighth District Medical Society and the Glynn County Medical Society.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Wright Manning, his daughter, Catherine Doxey St. Simons Island, his son, Stephen Manning, (Allison) Newnan, GA and five grandchildren, William Doxey IV, Abigail Doxey, Grace Manning and twins, Ava and Emma Manning. In addition, he is survived by his brothers, Tyrus Manning (Marian), Trudie, GA, Bobby Strickland (Susan), Winston-Salem, NC and Wain Strickland (Robin), of Brunswick. He was predeceased in death by his parents, his sister, Norma Payne, and a granddaughter, Anna Catherine Doxey whom he cared for medically after his retirement and enjoyed taking her to Brunswick High each morning. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He leaves to mourn him, his constant companion, Waverly, a miniature Australian shepherd whom he inherited from Abigail after his open heart surgery several years ago. She slept in his room for the last four and one half years guarding him always.
Dr. Manning was a long-time member of Christ Church, Frederica, a founding member of the Sea Island Club and Ocean Forest, a Certified Flight Instructor, certified scuba diver, and a licensed boat captain. His whole life, however, was devoted to the practice of medicine. He was the head of the Radiology Department in the Brunswick Hospital for many years and nothing, not even a hurricane, stopped his arrival there. Over the years he worked with many wonderful technologists and others in the x-ray department, as well as many peers that were his friends. They were all remembered fondly by him after he retired and even when seeing some occasionally, they always remembered him. He treated them all with respect, a housekeeper was just as important as the Chief of Staff and he greeted all equally.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Magnolia Manor who cared for him for rehab following a hospital stay, as well as the staff at Hospice. There are no words to adequately thank the Hospice staff for their loving and caring concern during the last week of Dr. Manning's life.
Father Tom Purdy, Christ Church, Frederica, is the priest in charge and administered the last rites at Dr. Manning's bedside just hours before his death. The family also is so grateful to their Christ Church friends including the staff who has been so attentive and caring, particularly Father Tom and Mother Ashton. Services will be held graveside at Christ Church, Frederica on Saturday, July 29, at 3 p.m. The family will greet guests one hour prior to the service at 2 pm.
