Donald was one of six children born to James William Taylor and Maggie Gertrude Brown Taylor. He served overseas in the US Navy during the Korean War. Once stateside, he went to work for Coca Cola where he delivered Cokes to sporting events and businesses. While serving Cokes at Howard Coffin Park he met his future wife, Elena. The couple soon married and enjoyed all life had to offer. They traveled throughout the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee showing Silver Tabby cats and were avid square dancers. They enjoyed attending conventions in Wyoming, Missouri and the Carolinas. Donald even square danced with his wife at his 90th birthday celebration! The couple also enjoyed golfing together.
Although Donald had no children of his own, he relished the time he spent with two of his nephews, Mark Taylor and Joe Taylor. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed teaching the boys about the wilderness, survival skills and camping. He was a Scout Master and influenced many young men’s lives. Donald was a Christian man who was fun loving, good and honest. He lived a very rich life but did not boast to others. He will be missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters; Hazel Leona Yeargins and Delores Jeanette Swink and two brothers, James Oran Taylor and Lawrence Wilbert Taylor.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elena Hawthorne Raynolds Taylor; a sister, Doris Lynette Brown (Butch) of Stone Mountain, GA; two special nephews, Mark Taylor (Kelly) of Waynesville and Joe Taylor (Charla) of Brunswick, and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service to honor Donald’s life will be held Sunday at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons
